“Sorry”
When we were young apologies were uncomplicated.
“Sorry Mommy” and that was it.
Naïve of the outer world,
War, death, and poverty,
We would enjoy the simplicity of our daily lives.
“Sorry” was the word imprinted in our brains,
The cure for all mistakes,
When you kicked sand in another’s face,
Drew on the walls,
Or started an argument.
“Sorry” would always make everything better.
But did we know what “sorry” meant?
The full definition and spelling?
No, it was just a word,
Just another word to be slapped into a sentence,
Another error corrected.
What is “sorry” to us now?
An apology with greater meaning,
Or still those five letters from childhood?
No, it is definitely something more.
“Sorry” is now the opposite of hurt and pain,
The treatment for bruised hearts and bloodied emotions,
The bandage on a stinging remark…
or stinging wound.
Does “sorry” always help?
Can it be accepted by us as easy as that?
Only time will tell.
“Sorry” is an utterance of healing,
Not an all-around cure.
Am I making sense?
How can you tell?
Does “I’m sorry” fix all the pain that I’ve dealt?
