Uchiha Obito was Kakashi's team mate back when they were young.
During a fight, Obito's carelessness made Kakashi save him, but by doing so he ruined his left eye; so when Obito got crushed by a boulder that he saved Kakashi from and was close to death, he told Kakashi to take his left eye that held the powers of the Sharingan.
Obito is the reason Kakashi has the Sharingan and his carefree personality; he gave his life to save his friends and is worth remembering today.
Although, if you support the Obito=Tobi theory, I guess that this is just a normal B-day... ninja
