For months now, this has been bothering me greatly(not too much, but heck). It seems there is a trend these days when people make or mix up genres due to a game's aspect or whatnot. I mean, isn't a genre a genre?
RPGs: The greatest bullshit I have been hearing is considering an RPG a SDAG. What's a SDAG? Ask the people who made it up. Story Driven Adventure Game they say...... What's the damn difference? It's like role playing lost its meaning. Role playing is more that just choosing your own path or customizing your own adventure. It's also about playing the role as someone and helping him finish that role. Don't bring that JRPG s**t either. It's the same damn thing.
FPS-Shooters or whatnot: No matter what, these kind of games are not RPGs. and I don't care if they were made by a Japanese person, or someone outside that. Sure you play the role as someone, but the shooting aspect makes it a shooter. Nuff said.
Hack and Slash vs RPGs: To tell the difference is common sense. There is no real way to explian it words. If it feels like an RPG, it's an RPG. If it feels like a Hack-and-Slash action game, then it is a Hack-and-Slash action game. Try not to put the game's elements into your own consideration.
