And now for something completely different...
...or as different as a damned blog can be, anyway. It started out as a project, it devolved into a chronicling of my misanthropy, rage, and occasional fits of glee. It sounds good, though, and might even make you laugh.
You've never really had to suffer any consequence
This whole mod gig is not always what it's cracked up to be. I'm sure this is not a surprise to any of you with a functioning neuron or two, but there's a particular subspecies of irritation that's not as immediately obvious: People who are-- or at least try to be, thankfully I can separate real life from Gaia easily-- emotionally manipulative or abusive. The people that call me into situations all righteously indignant, forgetting to tell me that they've been just as/almost as bad as the offending party, then treat me like a Bad Person for doing my job and handing out warnings across the board. I get people PMing me to work around the report system a lot, and they somehow feel like they're above the crowd, or that they're "in" with me, whatever that means. They feel that I won't touch them, or that I'm on their side, or some kind of convenient thing like that. Sorry. No, wait, I'm not. I'm impartial. I've smacked people I know and talk to when they've been out of line, because that's what I'm supposed to do. If you break the rules and I see it, I will tell you. That's how it goes, and ironically every acquaintance I've had business-type dealings with has admitted it, apologized, and knocked that s**t off while remaining friends. Would you prefer me impartial, or emotional and prone to modding based on revenge and favoritism and my current mood rather than anything solid? I hate this guilty feeling people want me to have for doing my job, and I hate that they think they can get away with more by being the first to tell me half the story. Lucky for me it doesn't work, and that any guilt someone else wants to hurl at me doesn't stick. pirate

P.S. If you know where my title comes from, you are m hero. Unless you Googled it, in which case I admire your resourcefulness but Google is my hero. :'D

I said this in Moony's journal and I'll say it in your's: There's no special treatment for knowing a moderator. Except in real life. Then they ninja you and ban you from reality. o__O;

I'd Google, but school will likely cause a problem. When the internet comes back...

Well, some parts of Google. They filter Gaia, too, but that doesn't stop me.

I'm getting a lot of search results about Alanis Morissette's "Narcissus", though the top one was "Under Rug Swept".

Narcissus it is. I have an unhealthy amount of love for that song. :'D

Hun, what you're doing is IMPORTANT, if it makes you feel any better. I've been to a forum where there is no moderating community to speak of. There is vicious antisemitism, racism, chauvinism; flaming and spamming is not only allowed, it's condoned. The place is a hellhole, and everytime I forget why I don't go in there, I go there for five minutes, get extremely offended and leave. I have no recourse on that forum but to flame the crap out of the idiots, and I am not a big fan of that.

Because here on Gaia, I can just REPORT them, and know that they'll get some sense knocked into them that way. Certain people think with their rear ends rather than their heads, and it is extremely helpful to give them a kick where it hurts, just to remind them that they can't get away with murder. It feels nice to know that I can actually get that done in a structured environment. I've talked to enough mods at this point to know what price you pay for us being able to do that, but I assure you, it's appreciated, and without it the whole darn place would fall apart.
