The old shadow that turned out to actually be a man surprisingly now was willing to talk an replied in quick succession.
"This place is nothingness, it is eternity...."
He said so concentrated on forward movement he had talked without ever having moved his head.
I asked bewildered "Whaaaaa, there's no way outta here?" as I still struggled to keep at a pace near enough to him to talk with him but yet not lose ground an fall behind.
"Never"
The old man kept shuffling on an so I watched an learned from the time we had first met till what felt like ages later to move as he did.
And from that time as we traveled, I was able to more or less stay at a balanced distance with him as we both made good time along the endless expanse of white nothingness.
In time the old man an I talked more and I learned even more from him about this place and how he got here too.
Strangely this place was more a alternate dimension than a place per-say as he explained that when he had gotten here after tripping an falling off his fishing boat while out fishing for dinner he was in the water then next moment he was in this place of nothingness and not drowning at all but not hurt either.
He was entirely alone in this odd place.
No food and no water just his clothes he had on when he had been fishing before an what was in his pockets which wasnt a lot. An old pocket knife a spool of fishing line in case his fishing rod's line had broke and his wallet all of which were pretty well useless here.
Then again he realized more an more this place had to be another dimension as time and stuff like hunger an need for water wasnt needed here. He was no more hungry or thirsty now speaking to him as he was when he first appeared in this place.
Decay didn't seem to happen normally here either. His clothes an shoes had not worn out nor had they degraded in any significant way. Time was very slow here as well as he knew he had been traveling in his present direction for years an years having met no one but me recently.
So as we moved on talked and kept each other company he and I shared our own story with each other. Where we were from an got to know one another decently well.
Soon enough we knew each other well enough th we exchanged nicknames when we talked to each other.
I would call him "Old Man" as he was old enough to be my grandfather. And he would call me "Slow-Poke" as I had taken ages to learn just how to keep up pace with him in the weird abrasive gravity that slows everything moving forwards here.
