I almost s**t myself last night when I realized the parallels between Amaranth and DotIoS.

1) They both have three main characters, plus a supporting fourth.
(Scott, Kitt, Ty + Dosai; Embly, Tondi, Amran + Dhou)

2) They both have a central god-like figure that's controlling things.
(O'kai-ya; the Witch)

3) One of the three main characters dies, although for different reasons.
(Ty is killed by Kitt; Amran is killed by his mother)

4) One of the three main characters drops out/turns on them.
(Ty turns on them; Embly stays with the Witch)

And now with the changes I'm pondering for DotIoS...

5) The ending is left open and the conflict is not resolved. You never find out what happens to the remaining characters.
(DotIoS ends with Scott and Kitt still on the island but it's never revealed if they stay or leave; Amaranth ends with Tondi and Dhou heading for the end of the Bridge, but it's never revealed whether they make it or not)
