Today at work, I learned something.

What happened: We ran out of tokens for the tag machine at work today. So, being that I should be a lead cashier by now as I actually stay up front, I opened up the tag machine to get tokens. I've done it several times. This time was different.

See, there's a metal bucket that is used to collect the tokens in the machine. One merely needs to pull a nob and remove the buckets, dump the tokens into a bowl, and replace the bucket. The last person to do this forgot step three.

So, when I pulled the hinged panel foward, the tokens spilled out through the slats in the bottom (for wires or something I guess) and on top of the wires behind it.

GAH! scream I said, apologizing to the customer that was patiently waiting. Frustrated, I pulled out several tokens and handed her 2. I closed the machine and went back to my registar. A moment later, the customer returned. The touch screen was no longer touchable. I sighed. "Maybe if I get the tokens that fell on the wires, it will work again" I said.

So back into the machine. I found the bucket sitting inconspiculuosly atop the narrow bar that the engraver traveled on. Carfully, I picked up the tokens one by one. "Hmm...well, as long as I'm careful, then nothing bad will happen!" I thought cheerfully.

And then one of the wired popped, smoked, and the screen went dead.

eek sad gonk "... sweatdrop Um...crap..I can give you a refund if you'd like, ma'am."

Moral: Cabels in a computer and the wiring in a machine and veeeeeeerrrrrryyyyyyyyy very very different. Hell, I barely brushed my finger against the damn thing crying and I'm very lucky I didn't lose my finger in that thing. Geeez. My roommate, knowing more about wiring and computers than I do, told me I more than likely closed the circuit and shorted something. My guess is that the wires leaned on a token, since they're, ya know, made of metal.

We both agree it wasn't my fault, though. Had I not tried to solve the initial problem of the touch screen not working, then someone else would have reached in to remove the tokens. Fact of life. People are stupid.
