xoxoThis is a subject I'm nervous to talk about, the way a person is when they write a midterm paper and they haven't done all of their research.
xoxoFredrik and his sister, Freya, were born in Sweden and grew up there for ten years before their father got a job in the US. Though life was never quite great for him anywhere, he often looked back to his life in his country of origin as the part that made sense. They only lived there for two years with their powers, and while things were getting bad by then, he at least had fond memories of playing with Freya and helping Mama with work at home. To commemorate those times, he's marked himself pretty heavily with symbolism of Sweden.
xoxoThe family spoke Swedish in their home, of course, having grown up with it. This was especially helpful for Mama and their father, who seemed to have more trouble acclimating than their children. Mama hardly spoke anything else before she left. Their father had to know English, and he tried very hard to get the children to speak it, but they did not let go as easily. Of course, Fred was the first to refuse to speak Swedish outright. At sixteen, he would answer his mother's questions in English and fought with Freya exclusively in the language in an attempt to alienate their parents.
xoxoAs an adult, he hardly speaks Swedish unless heavily inebriated or injured, but he keeps subtle remains of his accent in English.
xoxoThis last point is incredibly important, honestly, because I'm kind of lazy. Besides trying to teach myself Swedish and Norwegian for all of two weeks, I know very little about modern Scandinavian culture and it's hard to not fall into tropes that surround what little I do know about, say, Viking culture. As I continue to research Swedish accents in the English language and their phrases, I'm trying to be as careful as possible. (Though that's funny to say when I'm trying to make this guy throw around Swedish slurs with vicious gusto.)
