What makes you suddenly decide, "I want a child?" As if your own childhood wasn't bad enough, you want to put another child through the same thing, because you know you can't really do it any better than your own mother. In the early years, you wonder who your child will be. When they're babies, you marvel at their innocence, their sweetness. As toddlers, you teach them the basics of life and struggle with their temper tantrums. Then they go to school, and somewhere along the line, you don't know who they truly are anymore. When they find a sense of identity outside of you, you have to wonder, "Did I ever know my child?" As teenagers, they are more moody than ever. They isolate you, and you can see the deadline fast approaching: your child will soon transition into adulthood. As you try to hold fast to the person you believe them to be, the person they ARE pushes you away. And suddenly you realize: you didn't matter much in the end. They managed to find their own life, without you. You realize you've given eighteen empty years.
It's all the same, really, with little to no variation. Parental ignorance is one of the most prominent in our society. As a child, I have to wonder: what drove us apart? What made my life stop being significant to them? What happened to me so that they no longer know me? Do they think they know me? What DO they know?
