The boy crashed into the brick wall. The dark stepping toward him in a steady manner. Inch by inch it covered the space before him, eating all light and safety in its path. The boy stared into its vast darkness, searching for hope, for a chance to escape. The darkness was now mere inches from his face. He stared, wide-eyed at it. He shuddered, his knees shaking, threatening to give way. The darkness shifted in front of him, twisting, churning, creating a disfigured mass. A thick piece of the mass shifted toward the boy, threatening to touch him, to grab him. He screamed hard and long enough to break everything, including his own vocal chords. The detached mass rushed into the open gate, branching out in every corner.
