"Clumsy little oaf!" Opal's mother cried. She whipped her youngest child with a metal hanger. "Next time don't drop my fine china!" After her beating Opal retreated to the garage once again. After the fresh wounds on her back closed she began to feel the wall inch by inch looking for any crack that might be widened. Behind a cardboard box she found something even better: a hole. Quick as a fox she started crawling through it. Days at a time of starvation had thinned her to the point that she could fit through the narrow space. For the first time in months she pushed aside a trashcan and emerged into sunlight. Unsure of what to do next she froze. "Opal's gone!" rang out behind her. She took off down the alley beside their house and looked for a place to hide. Seeing an open shed she dove inside and shut the door behind her.
