"Everybody's going to the party, have a real good time. Dancing in the desert, blowing up the sunshine."
With the sun shining as brightly as it was, Anya found it difficult to focus on the task at hand. She was currently laying atop a sand dune in her full gear, and the heat from the sun was making it hard for her to concentrate on what the man next to her was saying they should do next. She quickly scanned over the area, making sure that everything was safe for them, but spotted something she had not planned on. Enemies. She held her hand up, and silenced the talking man while she watched the approach enemy troops.
"This is not how this was supposed to happen..." She said under her breath. She lowered her hand in to a fairly small satchel that she had, and from it, drew a smoke grenade. She moved slightly closer to the man beside her. "When it goes off," She gestured to the grenade in her hand. "We run. We have to get this," She patted the small metal case between them. "Back to the base. Alright? The fewer casulaties, the better," With that said, she pulled the pin from the grenade, and tossed it towards the troops. It landed, and rolled into the center of the group, before the smoke began to spill from it. "Let's go," She said, grabbing the metal case and easily getting to her feet and into a run as the dense white smoke rolled around the enemy. The man got to his feet just as quickly, and together they ran, sticking close to building walls within the thick smoke to be sure that they wouldn't be seen.
Running through the smoke seemed almost like a dance to Anya, as they dodged enemy soldiers who happened to be very close by, and they had almost made it completely through the troop when Anya heard an explosion ring out very close to them. She ducked her head down, still running, her mind focused now on getting the little metallic box back to their base. The dance became deadlier as gun shots rang out all around Anya. The smoke began to get thinner as Anya ran, and as she and her fellow soldier broke free from its thickest parts, they realized just how close they were. The base was within sight, it was just a matter of getting there... which, to Anya, seemed like a walk in the park. From somewhere within the smoke, another gun shot rang out.
This time, impact was sudden and startling. The shot pierced through Anya's left shoulder, and she fell to one knee in pain. It took a moment for her to gather herself again, before she was able to get back to her feet, and continue what needed to be done. The man she had been with rushed up, and in a desperate attempt to get them back sooner, wrapped an arm around her waist to help her run. The base rushed quickly into larger view, even as Anya's vision paled. The pain in her would dimmed as she bled, but her determination ran strong, and she continued to push herself, knowing what would happen if they failed this mission.
They made it into the base, ducking down behind one of the vehicles that was there as they caught their breath. Anya's vision became hazier, but she was alert enough to know when her commanding officer came, and retrieved the item she had been carrying. She could not hear anything, except the pounding of her heart, but when she saw a medical team approaching, she knew she was in a bad position. Even knowing that, she slipped out of consciousness.
