Insanity is a Broken Mirror

It’s that moment when you stand
face to face
Staring down
your own reflection
in the tall vanity mirror

What you have just done
The mother who made you cry---------I hate you
The mother who you made cry---------I wish you would die
What’s been done to you

The twist of her frowning lips
Brows crooked down
Eyes narrowed and fists balled
No wonder the little sister sits
Motionless, afraid to breathe
No wonder the dog slunk off
And… The father that was never there

The face in the mirror is not so different
From hers
The way your eyes are so hard
The way your expression warps
I wish you would die

The reflection in the mirror holds you still –
No, you are holding the reflection still?
That red face doesn’t feel this searing heat
The blistered tears dripping on your shirt
Not even the constricted blaze in your chest
Mirror you is cold, surreal, empty,
and this you doesn’t bleed

The sound of your own pulse
Reminds you that time throbs on
Your reflection is holding you so immobile
You can’t breathe
I wish you would die

Either you must go on a being of fire
Or you must go on cold and blank

You lunge –
Or maybe you in the mirror moved first?
Two reflected clenched fists converge at the same spot
I hate you! I wish you would die!

It wasn’t the sound when a glass falls and smashes
It was more the sound when you stomped on the family picture
It wasn’t the sound you’d expect to hear when you had killed something

Your hand comes back towards your body
Like it isn’t yours
It’s crying crimson tears
A spider web distorts your face with a splotch of scarlet
Nine images of your own face leer at you still

Did the mirror win?

Or can you only kill yourself?
