Welcome to the darkside...
The Weekly Rant LXXXV - "1337" gamers
If you've ever played a video game online, you've probobly seen someone that gets a little too into it. You know, the guys that parade about the servers broadcasting their strong suits and every one of their immediate thoughts, daring others to observe/challenge them, kind of like the playground c$%ts from a few rants ago, only a bit sadder.

I'll start with the one with the closest thing to merit, online console games. With stuff like gears of war or fifa or whatever, there's usually a degree of talent required to effectively play the game, like knowing how to pass the ball to the best person to score a point or evade rocket assault, but there's only so good you can get, really. They're mostly games played with controllers that revolve around one core skill like aiming, once you've got that part figured out, it's just a matter of doing the same 4 or 5 actions (duck, pop out, shoot, grab ammo, duck) over and over until the match ends. To claim superiority over someone who's doing the exact same thing with his ducking a little off is ridiculous.

Then there's mmorpgurs, usually taking place in a world where equipment and level mean more than player ability. It's not just the max leveled idiots going around hunting for lower level idiots to effortlessly kill that piss me off, there's also the jackasses that look for someone around their level that's already almost dead or distracted with another foe. Even the few who don't look for/exploit every little advantage they can find are annoying. Losing a contest of back and forth shin-kicking makes someone inferior unless they say so, is pretty much the message such folks love to deliver.

I'll never understand how some people can think of themselves as "1337" (for those who don't know, the 1 is supposed to be an "L", the 337 is supposed to be "eet". L + eet = ehl-leet, elite) for being victorious in a video game, something that was meant for fun, not teabagging. (which means sitting on a corpse, I think) Naturally, some folk get off on the swearing and teabagging aspect, so I guess there's not much that can be done.

BOTTOM LINE: If you're playing a game solely to "win", you're not playing a game anymore.

That's this week's rant, I'm Varmeip, Goodnight.
