White Lights (The Story)

#4- Sudden Flash

I stared at the ceiling, studying it of its cracks and bumps. It was nice being alone and silent since school was the total opposite. Sometimes I missed having people around after coming home from school though. But it didn't matter now because my mother and brother always come home before dinner. I didn't have a father at the moment. My blood father left us a long time ago when I was one and my brother was three. I knew what he looked like from the pictures in the photo album, but I never knew how he acted. My mother would never talk about him. Whenever I asked her about him or brought up the topic, she would quickly change the subject to something I really needed to think about, like school work, making sure I'd forget the whole idea and not mention it again.
I once did get a small piece of information from her when I was little, after hours of begging and whining.
I learned that when my father left, my mother had asked him, why? He spoke three single words that I never forgot.
"To protect Ayumi."
And he left, walking out the door without saying another word.
Mom spoke about it with so much anger and sadness I didn't ask her again about him, ever. I wondered to myself, would he be a good father if he still was here? I thought for a while and shook the thought out of my head. I tried to think about something else.
Summer vacation. That was something I could think about for days without getting annoyed. I couldn't wait for summer vacation. It was almost here.
Just a few more weeks! I thought to myself.
I closed my eyes, thinking about what I was going to do all summer and absorbing the cool air conditioning.
Suddenly, without any warning, a volt of white light flashed in my mind. It was so blinding, even with my eyes closed, it shone through my mind.
"Ayumi.." a voice echoed in my head, loudly, pounding my brain. All of a sudden, I felt a hot touch on my forehead which burned my entire head.
My eyes shot open in fear. I noticed I was panting like I had run a mile without stopping. My chest thumped loudly. I sat up and waited for something to happen. I only heard the sounds of cicadas buzzing on trees outside. I touched my forehead. It was cool and there was no pain at all. I felt scared and confused. What the heck was happening? I put my face in my hands and slowly rubbed my blurred eyes.
"Ugh." I groaned. I sat still for a few more seconds, waiting for my breath to return to normal. I didn't want to close my eyes again. Why is this happening to me? I tried my best to come up with reasonable and logical answers.
It must be the summer heat building up. It must have been melting my brain, giving me these strange visions. I sighed and decided that was it. It was quite hot out today anyway. I felt proud of myself coming up with such a good reason.
As soon as I felt a bit better, I got up onto my feet, picking up my book bag which was lying beside the door. I blinked twice, leaving the vision behind me, before shutting the front door and heading up the stairs to my room to get going with my homework.
