The reason why he got the "heart" ring is because if they used the word "spirit" it would show a religious overtone that the show didn't need. Besides, even the move "The Fifth Element" aggreed with captain planet! I expalin the hair as the people at the genetics lab having spiked the hair growth formulae with kool-aid.
