CHAPTER THREE
It was pouring outside. My hair was absorbing the rain, and my clothes were now drenched in water. I looked up at the palm trees, and I wondered how my friends were doing back home. I didn’t even tell them that I was leaving. I thought to myself, and my eyes switched their gaze down to the sidewalk.
I thought of all the great sleepovers and days I had at school back when I was a little girl. My parents still treated me like a mule, and the only person who I could trust was Christie. She understood everything, and we were inseparable.
Besides Christie, everyone looked at me and stared at me like I was a freak. They had all somehow heard about my personal life at home, perhaps from that stupid tattle tale boy, Mark, who used to live a couple houses down. Mark had always hated me, and thought that I was as cruel as my parents, so he never stayed within an arm’s length near me.
Christie once introduced me to a boy named Will, and he never thought badly about me, either. I remember exactly what happened that day. Will was about my height, and he had smooth brown hair. He was a little shy, but he soon became one of my best friends.
“This is Vanessa,” Christie said, and pointed at me. “Vanessa, this is Will.” She said, and focused her attention to Will. Will blushed a little, but smiled at me, his green eyes twinkling. I smiled back, and we shook hands. Then, suddenly, out of nowhere, Will hugged me tightly.
“Don’t worry, we’ll be best friends… forever!” Will shouted, and squeezed me tighter. Gosh, he's friendly...
I still remember Will and Christie’s phone numbers. Actually, I think I brought my address book, though it only has the numbers of two people. I wonder if they still remember me? I thought to myself, and I stared at the ground in wonder. Alright, then I’ll give them a call. I thought, and I pulled my cell phone out of my bag that I just so happened to be carrying at the moment. I dialed Will’s number first, and my hand trembled as I held the phone up to my ear.
After a moment, someone picked up. His voice was excited, and as soon as I heard his voice, my eyes lit up and a smile stretched across my face.
“Hey! It’s Vanessa!” Will shouted through the phone, and I knew that he remembered me.
“Will! You… remember me?!” I shouted, and I almost started crying. I was so happy to hear his voice again.
“You bet I do! We're best buds forever, remember?” Will said, and I could tell he was smiling.
“We have to get together, Will! I miss you so much…”
“Sure! Where are you?”
I paused for a moment. “I’m in Orlando, Florida.”
“Awesome. Why’d ya move there?”
“…My parents kicked me out of my house.”
Silence.
“Oh. Okay, well, I’m sure it much nicer there, then, right?”
“Of course! I met a very nice boy named Jake. I’m living in his apartment. It’s on the 3rd floor of an apartment on Elizabeth Rd.”
“Alright. I’ll be there soon!” Will said, and hung up the phone.
I slowly closed the lid, and gently placed it back into my bag. I was still standing next to the curb, but I wasn’t paying attention to anything around me. I was too caught up thinking about the good times Will and Christie and I had. The rain had stopped.
I felt someone tug on my arm, and before I knew it, I was sitting in the passenger seat of a man’s red Saturn car. There was only a window in front of us, and the wind blew through my hair as he pressed on the pedal and we sped away from my new house.
My eyes focused on the man next to me, who was wearing dark sunglasses and he had short, blonde hair. His skin was tanned, and he had a small pierce in his left ear.
“Vanessa!” I heard someone shout, and I turned around. It was Jake, running toward the speeding car.
“Jake!!” I yelled back, and then I screamed “Stop!”
“What?!” The man next to me said, and the car ceased. Unfortunately, we were in the middle of the road at an intersection.
Cars were swirving past us, and I saw one aiming directing toward the Saturn that I was sitting.
“Oh my God…” I whispered, and I could only stare at the car coming closer and closer. Fear was consuming me.
“VANESSA!!!!” Jake yelled as loud as he could.
A voice shouted "Look out!", but I couldn't place my finger on who said it.
I closed my eyes and then everything d i s a p p e a r e d .
This time, I will post Chapter 4 on February 9, 2008. Sorry! The original post date was Feb. 7, 2008, but I had to postpone it XP
