CHAPTER TWO
“I’m Vanessa…” I said, and stared into his ocean-blue eyes again. Kyaa! He’s too cute
“That’s a beautiful name. How old are you? I’m 17! Going to be 18 in November.” Jake said, and smiled.
“Thank you. As for me, I’m 17, too. I’m going to be 18 in August.”
“So, are you just visiting, or are you returning home?”
“Oh, uhm… I’m moving here. My parents kicked me out of my old home.”
“What? That’s horrible! Why would they do that?”
“Well, I wanted to leave. Plus, I probably should have left soon, anyway. I am 17, after all. It’s no big deal.”
“All right, then. I could show you around, if you want.”
“That would be great! But, I still need to find somewhere to live, so I should probably do that first…”
“I have an extra room in my apartment, so you can move in.”
“Are you serious?! Would you really let me move in with you?!” I shouted, and he put his hand on top of my head.
“You bet.” Jake replied, and continued to smile, with his pearl-white teeth beaming down at me. I felt my face turning into a shade of pink again. “Come on, let’s go get you unpacked, and I’ll show you around.”
“Okay!” I replied, and glanced at the window. Little droplets of rain covered it, and outside, palm trees were gently being rustled by the wind. The air was calm, but sticky and humid. The sky; a light shade of grey.
As soon as the taxi ceased, Jake stepped out of the car and held out his hand again. I gently placed my hand on his, and I carefully stepped out.
I looked in front of me, and I saw a tall apartment. It was layered with bricks, and it reminded me a little of my old home in Chicago, where all the skyscrapers were.
“I’ll show ya around.” Jake said, and walked over to the door and slowly opened it, then held it open for me to follow. I caught up to him, and then we walked up to an elevator in the lobby. As the doors slowly opened, no one appeared to be inside.
Jake went in first, and I came in after him. The walls were embroidered with painted flowers and vines. One of the lights that said “3rd Floor” on it lit up as Jake’s finger poked it.
After a few moments, the elevator’s doors slowly opened up again. Jake left the elevator first. I ran up to him and hugged him tightly.
“Thank you so much!” I shouted, and squeezed him even harder.
“It’s no problem,” Jake said, and smirked. “You’re like a cute little lost puppy. How could I possibly abandon you?”
All I could do was stand there and hold him close to me. His arms soon wrapped around my back, and I dug my head into his chest. My heart was thumping loudly in my head, and suddenly, I let go of him. He let go after I did. He looked down at me again, and at a glance his face looked filled with sorrow, but a moment later, he looked as happy as ever.
“Come on, we’ve got to get you unpacked!” Jake said, and grabbed my suitcases and left me standing dumbfounded with my bag placed on my shoulder.
“R-right…” I said, still amazed at what had just happened. I … I hugged him… I hugged a boy! I’ve never felt this before… I bet this is what everyone calls ‘love’. But the best thing is, he hugged me back! Maybe he loves me, too? It gets me all excited just thinking about it!!
He showed me around my new home, and my room was right next to his. The only thing separating us was a thick wall. My bed had only one blanket on it, which was a navy blue. The walls were left unpainted, and the only thing in there besides my bed, was a wooden dresser that looked quite old.
“Don’t worry,” Jake began, walking past me with a pile of his laundry in his hands that he had picked up earlier today. “I’ll go out shopping tomorrow to get you some new stuff for your room, and we can go grocery shopping, too. You can come with me, if you want.”
“O-of course I will!” I said, and grimaced at him.
“Great! Why don’t you unpack your suitcases, and I’ll order some pizza!” Jake shouted, and immediately picked up the phone and dialed the number to order a pizza.
I set my luggage down onto the rug-covered floor, and plopped down on my bed. The dresser seemed quite old and worn-out, but somehow the bed looked new and clean. My eyes focused on the door of my bedroom, and I heard Jake’s door to his room close. I slowly got off of my new bed, and I carefully stepped out towards the front door, and onto the elevator. The doors were closing, and I gazed back into Jake’s apartment. The doors shut, and I was lowered back down into the lobby. I stepped off of the elevator, and I opened the front door, and I sauntered outside.
Jake was still wandering around in his room, looking for where he had placed his money. He finally found it tucked under his pillow, and he opened his door and walked into the living room.
“Hey, Vanessa, what kind of pizza do you like? Sausage? Pepperoni?” Jake asked, and glanced around the room. “Vanessa?” Jake said quietly to himself, and walked over to my room and creaked my door open.
“Where did she go?” Jake said, his hand now trembling as he clutched the doorknob.
