Demon in White Part 1
Part 1: America to Japan I did not know anything about what I was to do the morning of my first day at work. I worked at the American embassy as a clerk. I sat at a front desk and translated for Japanese students when possible what to expect when they went to America for the first time. I did not enjoy it, but I did realize it was a job that had to be done everyday and I was paid enough. My name is Callisto Markus, I am 25 years old, Leo, and live in a small apartment in Tokyo. I have brown hair and dark gray almost blue eyes, I kind of look plain to some people and really I don’t mind it in the least, at least it is better than being compared to my sister by my parents. The second morning at work, I noticed at my desk a large vase of blood red roses. I blinked and wonder who would send me such a thing. I stared at the card and then looked around the floor wondering who it was and if it was some kind of joke. “You know, it isn’t everyday that Dr. Muraki sends someone these,” I saw the woman sitting next to me smile. “He’s a good man, I’m sure he just thought you were unique. He can’t speak English very well, but he must really like you.” Blood red roses? I blinked at the roses and then went back to work, my boss was not too impressed with the flora in the office. He viewed it as some kind of attack on his view of the world, he was an American who lived in the deep south and viewed anyone who was not my husband had no right to send such things to me. “GET RID OF THEM!” he glared at me. “Or find yourself right back on the plane to America.” I stomped off with them in my hand and went back to my apartment and decided to put them next to my window. I had a good view of the embassy from where I was and really it was just stupid that my boss viewed this as such an offense. I went back to work and sat down at my plain desk, looking at the same old screen. “I see your boss did not enjoy the roses,” I looked up and noticed a man with platinum blond hair and steel gray eyes looking at me. “It must be very frustrating.” “I can’t really complain, it is my job after all,” I sighed wondering if this was Muraki. “I think I would like to buy you lunch, it would make up for my grave error.” “Hai, I would like that.” ****** Kono Koni was a small café outside of Tokyo General Hospital and the American Embassy. Most of the employees from both places would come over for lunch at this little café and it was rumored to have the best sandwiches in town. I couldn’t believe that I was being invited to lunch by such a wonderfully handsome man like Muraki. “They have good sandwiches here,” he smiled at me and ordered a ham and swiss for me. “Thank you, how did you know I liked those kind of sandwiches?” He smiled at me, those eyes were hypnotic. “I need a date for a ball at the Tokyo Radison tomorrow night, I would like it if you would consider coming.” “Alright, that would be fun,” I smiled and we finished our lunch. He and I spoke about our lives, he seemed quite interested though in what part of America that I had come from. “You must miss the mountains up there,” he looked at the pictures in a magazine of Colorado. “With all the snow we get, sometimes people go stir crazy.” “Other than that, there must be some other things there that impress you?” I smiled and thought back to America’s own little things. “Well, I suppose I do miss some things, I remember that there were these really pretty wolves, I saw them running in a pack, it was beautiful.” “Wolves? I see, it must be nice having one always with you,” he whispered into my ear and my eyes went to a small shadowy speck by my legs. My eyes widened, he could see it, he could see my spirit wolf sitting right next to me, his head on my lap and was staring up at Muraki in contempt. “How can you?” “I saw it the moment you started working at that Embassy. It must be nice to have a spirit guard.” ***** What was going on? Why was I so excited? I suppose the night of the ball was going to be exciting, Muraki had since the day he mentioned seeing my spirit wolf decided to make it his business to escort me everywhere around Japan. He told me things, sometimes things about people called Shinigami who would kill me if they knew about my powers. I don’t know if I believed him at first, but then I started to see a boy with blond hair and green eyes following me home. I would see notes under my door and my heart would pound. “Don’t go near him again,” they read and I was about ready to faint. I had called Muraki the first time they started to appear at my door. He came like a knight and he told me it was alright, that he would make sure that no one would hurt me. ***** I did start to notice my spirit wolf, Koda acting unusual, he had his hackles raised whenever Muraki was around. He would growl, but Muraki just said he was being protective, when Koda saw the boy, it would run up to him and suddenly, it looked as if the boy was talking to Koda. The night of the ball, I sat in Muraki’s car and felt a little headed, Muraki had given me something to keep me from passing out. “It seems that you are straining yourself a little too much, you need to relax, this will just help you,” he smiled handing me the pill. Without question I took it. We walked into the large hotel and noticed that most of this was a doctor’s banquette and that really, I was just showing up for Muraki’s sake. I suppose I am just going to play the wife, I thought softly. “They know I’m not married, I just felt like I was going to be useless without a date,” he walked off to get us something to eat. I did feel kind of tired and sat down next to him. He smiled at me knowing too well that drug was working, that was when I noticed something strange going on, that was when I blacked out. Why is it so sunny? I woke in a strange room and two flying chickens were looking in on me. “She’s awake! Hisoka, she’s awake!” One of them was yelling, chickens don’t talk, I thought and sat up slowly. “Where am I?” I muttered. “You are lucky to be alive,” I heard the boy who had been following me sitting down on the bed. Koda was sitting next to bed, he looked quite proud of himself. “You are in at the Ministry of Hades,” the boy told me and I nearly jumped out of my skin. “Koda knew right off that Muraki wasn’t a good person, I suppose that was why he thought that trying to get us to you first was a good thing. I’m Hisoka and my partner should be along soon.” The door flew open and man holding a package of doughnuts walked in. “I didn’t know what flavor you would like, so I bought them all,” he smiled at me with this beautiful purple eyes. “Hisoka, why didn’t you tell me she was awake?” “I did, three times,” the boy muttered and dug through the package bringing out a glazed doughnut and put it in my hand. “You like glazed doughnuts filled with honey, right?” I nodded dumbly, at least it was amazing how these two got along so well. “Hisoka, that hurts, I was going to eat that,” the one, Tsuzuki I latter found out was rather kinder than Hisoka was. I turned my attention back at the door to see a man who was tall in a dark suit and wearing a tie. “I am happy that Ms. Markus is awake,” he turned his attention Hisoka and Tsuzuki who were telling me about what happened. “You are in great danger, according to our records, you aren’t suppose to die yet.” “What are you talking about, Dr. Muraki said you would kill me,” I finally spoke up and saw Hisoka’s eyes widen. “What? No, we were trying to protect you from him. He’s been after you since you arrived in Tokyo.” I turned my head and looked out the window at the cherry trees. “What do you mean? He’s a doctor, doctors aren’t suppose to kill people, unless he’s Dr. Mangle.” “Dr. Who?” Tsuzuki evidently had never taken a history course in his life and had no idea. “Never mind,” I sighed and just looked away feeling angry, more at not listening to Koda.
