I have been a Linux user for well over 10 years now and in the last 7 years it has been my main or only computer operating system.

A lot of people are starting to use it as an alternative to MS Windows or instead of it.

I think that many of you here have heard of it or use it, but I wanted to give others the chance to learn a bit about it and maybe even try Linux.

What is Linux?

Linux is a Unix-like operating system originally developed by Linus Torvalds in 1991.
Every desktop computer uses an operating system, Linux is an Open Source operating system distributed for free. Linux is an especially great operating system for older or less powerful PCs, because it generally takes less memory and doesn't need the fastest or newest hardware to the same things as some operating systems would like you to have.

Many Linux distributions (Linux distributed by different groups of people) even run right from a CD or DVD, so u can just boot off of one and try it out and decide if you like it before you install it. Of course, Linux runs better on a hard drive, but some peopel prefer to just run it from the cd or DVD disk.

I have tried a lot of "distros" over the years, but for general use I recommend Ubuntu and its family of Linux operating systems.

There are many reasons to try, but great security, less need for a new and expensive computer, and the fact that it and lots of other software for Linux are free are as good of reasons as any!

I know everyone has their preferences, but you might want to give Ubuntu or another Linux distribution a try.

I am glad I tried it and eventually, it won me over.
