“I, The Sleeper”
I can hear the Officer barking out orders,
I can see the the bright lights,
Outside the trenches,
I see the death the war has caused
I’m running through the trenches,
Away from German infested trenches
As I’m runnig,
I look up and see my life pass before me
While I’m in trance,
A bombshell is headed right for me
Before it hit the ground,
I tried to get cover,
Behind a huge boulder,
I didn’t make it in time
The impact blew me back,
Shards of metal and earth hit me,
Then I blacked out
When I came to,
I felt fine
When I tried to stand,
It hit me,
In the explosion I had lost my right leg
The pain rushed into me,
Like a roaring waterfall
I tried to stand up again but the pain was to great,
So I just laid down and accepted death
To my surprise a U.S. rear guard came from behind,
He glanced at me and then walked off
I tried to say the word help,
But my voice was too hoarse
So I just lay there thinking how meaningless my life must be
Then I fell asleep for the last time with the sound of war in my mind
I guess I'm not much of a poet, am I?
