To JK Rowling:
Thank you. It was perfect. <3
It’s hard for me to express it anyway other than that. I have been a bit apprehensive, you see, in the past few months, about how this story that I had spent the great majority of my childhood and adolescence completely enamored with was going to end. I was even a bit worried; what would I do, I thought, if I didn’t like it?
My fears were certainly unfounded. As always, you have done an amazing job, and I am astounded by the genius that has spilled out of your brain and onto the pages I just finished reading for the first time. It is, truly, perfect. Mind you, I wasn’t fond of certain characters meeting their end, but it was necessary to the story, and the story was well worth their sacrifice.
I can’t get over it, looking back, how much your books affected me—still affect me. I turned nineteen a few weeks before the release of Deathly Hallows. I was nine when a wonderful aunt sent me a set of three “charming British books” that have since been worn so badly that duct tape holds one of them together. Ten years of my life, I have loved the story of Harry Potter and the world you wove him into. Without Harry, I have no idea how my life would be different. He did not get me to read more; I have had packed bookshelves since I was barely walking. He did not teach me lessons about loyalty or love that I didn’t know; my wonderful family made sure of that. But I do know that, without Harry Potter, I would have missed out on some of the most joyful experiences and moments of my life.
As I (somewhat reluctantly) enter adulthood, I won’t be leaving Harry behind me. I now think joyfully of the day that comes when my own children discover Harry’s story on my bookshelf, much as I discovered my mother’s books. Though you may not see it, what you have produced will profoundly affect the lives of children and adults for generations to come.
Thank you so much. Thank you for not letting an idea you had on a train pitter out and die there. Thank you for believing in your story as much as you have. Thank you for finishing it for me, and every other fan, and for yourself. I couldn’t have asked for a thing more. It truly was perfect.
Good luck in everything you do. You have truly been a blessing in my life and the lives of many others. May God keep you and your family and let his face shine upon you all the days of your life.
Sincerely,
A Fan for Life.
