Ninja-ing my way through Life
How Long Until...?
...I feel less incompetant? I used to have lots of self-esteem, oh yes. I was self-confident and smart and talented at one point in my life. But I don't feel like that anymore. I feel small, stupid, hopeless and without direction.

I'm not doing well in school, at least not well enough for my parents. I had a dream last night, the only thing I remember really well is that I got my midterm report card and I received a 37% in math and my parents locked me in my room. I don't know which I would rather, to be able to live up my parents expectations or to have them lower theirs to my level.
I wish I was better at music, my range sucks and I'm not sure how to get better. I want to quit my job, but I don't really mind having it and I need the money. I don't spend enough time with Scott. I want to play rugby but I don't know if I'll be able to at this point. I thought I knew where I was going with my life, I sat down and thought about it on a more realistic level and realized I don't know where I'm going at all.

I hate these bouts of self-pity and angst. I just wish I had more time.

    Don't we all.

Time waits for nobody. Everything is carved in sand. Get on or jump off.

Since you are probably clawing at your face in confusion, lemme explain. First, time never stops for anybody. Even if it feels like you have no time, you probably have more than you think. Try cutting your television and internet time in half and use that extra bit for math and Scott. Not mixed together, of course.

Second, everything is carved in sand. Sand moves and changes over time, just as everything else does. If you spend a little more time working on math, you'll get better. No doubt about it. Just because you can't play clarinet like Marc doesn't mean you won't be able to. Just work on your low notes and practice often. Ask Marc and others what they do to improve.

Third, get on or jump off. It's like Mike said, without the crudeness: do it or don't. If you want to get better at math, work on it. Don't just hope that you'll magically improve.

People will never bend themselves to fit your life. But you can work on trying to influence decisions. Maybe if you show your parents you are trying and you still get lower marks, they will see that their standards are too high. Or maybe just talk to them without pinning your problems on them or impulsively saying things.

    I concur.

I think it is the best advice I have given yet.

"my range sucks and I'm not sure how to get better."

Long tones. Pick low notes, hold them for as long as you can. Listen for the best possible tone you can get from the low notes. Start entirely within the lower chalemeau register, doing that at least once every warmup for about a week.

Then add some notes in the lower clarion register. After a while of that, try higher clarion. THEN, try playing altissimo. I suspect they'll at least sound, even if they sound bad.
