Something IU found by the author of an interesting fanfic... of how they write...
1. Get idea for sex scene.
2. Write sex scene.
3. Discover that other elements are intruding on the sex, because it's just not all that sexy without some context.
4. Start writing non-sex scenes to amplify context.
5. Discover that a plot bunny has popped up its little head somewhere between the lines.
6. Sit back and consider whether to skin the bunny.
7. Aw, what the hell--create enough plot and there are sure to be more sex scenes before long, right?
8. Figure out the basic structure of the story: path, character arcs, ending. Might write outline, might keep it in head. Do research; re-read the source material back to front in great detail; bounce character essays off fellow fans to clarify issues.
9. Write more sex scenes.
10. Post the first few chapters; now it's official and MUST be finished, so ADD distractions are kept at bay for the moment.
11. By now it seems pretty solid and only needs to be pecked out on keyboard. Piece of cake.
12. Discover massive error of fact or judgment that upsets the entire premise.
13. Despair.
14. Get even better idea and cheer up again.
15. Repeat items 12-14 as needed.
16. Discover that the characters have taken over and are dictating what they want to do rather than taking directions. Change a few details accordingly, but refuse them permission to elope to Las Vegas just yet. Another sex scene should shut them up for a while.
17. Thank God for feedback.
18. Revise all previous chapters sentence by sentence; revamp outline; worry about reaction to something a little ecchi as if fellow fans were going to tell Mom; get so familiar with the sex scenes that they don't seem sexy any more.
19. Procrastinate and obsess. (See previous item.)
20. Write more sex scenes to get the juices flowing again.
21. Wrap it the hell up and boot it out of the brain cells; it's just a damn fic, not frickin' Tolstoy!
22. Feel odd sense of loss now that it's over.
