Marius Dublin coughed in pain and felt the taste of blood rush over his tongue. His short, wet, dark hair shined under the streetlights, as did his green eyes. One after another, he felt the hits and kicks beat his already battered body. Jonathan Reed ran his hands through his dark blonde hair catching his breath. “Why did it come down to this Dublin? Why did you have to poke your nose where it didn’t belong?” Jonathan hit Marius again causing blood to spray from Marius’s mouth as well as a few chipped teeth. The crunch of Dublin’s face felt good beneath Jonathans fist. Marius looked down at the snow-covered streets of Knoxville Tennessee. He wanted to fall down to die but the two bulky, hired thugs that Jonathan had hired held him arm by arm for Reed’s personal pleasure. Reed lifted Marius’s head staring down his green eyes with his bright blue eyes. Rita had always said that Reed had the most beautiful blue eyes she had ever seen and that always stung for Marius to hear although he had never thought he’d be staring at them. “You see, now my suit has blood all over it Mar. It’s a two thou’ white tux, you can respect that can’t you?” Marius gasped for air but it came out as sputters through the blood spraying all over Jonathan’s white dress shoes. Reed’s smile dropped, he had been having fun so far, and it felt good to get a competitor out of the way even if they never really had a chance to begin with. “You know what you need Mar?” Reed waited for a reply but Marius couldn’t bring himself to respond. “You need to respect another man’s territory.” Reed kneed Marius in the stomach again. “You see, Rita is mine, you can’t have her.” Marius coughed and sputtered once more. “Oh don’t tell me Mar.” Reed began to pace back and forth smiling and laughing as he spoke. “You were just talking to her. Just being a good friend by giving her a few pointers to her personal life.” Jonathan leaned down next to Marius’s bloodied ear and whispered. “I’ve seen how you look at her Mar. I know how you feel about her and I’ve heard the stories. How you two used to be a lot closer than just friends. You never bothered to tell me that you dated her before.” Reed leaned back again. He was right, Marius and Rita had been a pair years before and he still loved her deeply. Many people thought that Marius was incapable of love now however, he did a good job of hiding it. He never told her since their relationship, but he never quite stopped loving her, though he tried. “Drop him boys.” Marius fell to his knees in the cold snow. His head felt heavy and his body seared with pain. Reed grabbed a bat from one of the thug’s hands. “It’s nothing personal Mar, but I can’t let anyone get close to my girl now can I? You know how it is.” The blow knocked Marius to the ground as his eyes rolled around in his head. His head pounded and he knew that his jaw was broken now. The snow’s numbing cold felt better against his body however and helped the pain. He heard footsteps as Jonathan walked over next to him and knelt. Marius’s eyes rolled into place as they stared at Jon’s fair perfect face. Jon lifted his hand beside his own shoulder and a thug placed a pistol in his hand. “You see Mar, she loves me, not you. You’d only be an annoyance and so I’m going to take care of the annoyance now.” Marius felt the cold barrel press against the open wound on his head. He began to gurgle and laugh through the blood. Reed looked him in the face and smiled. “Why do you laugh there Mar?” Marius lifted his feeble hand and grabbed Jon’s arm leaving a bloody mark on the sleeve. His words came slowly as he gasped for breath. “Ca-cause Jon… I do… I love her… an-and… I’m going to kill you… for her…” Reed’s smile dropped causing his perfect white teeth to vanish. “No your not Mar.”
