Ray and Hinote First Meet
One day much like any other Ray Tashino, a seemingly normal boy, is five years of age and playing in his backyard, alone. All of the sudden he hears some weird singing coming from the woods just beyond his fence. The song he heard was like nothing he had ever heard before, it was calm but at the same time it was sad. Ray was drawn to the music. Before he realized it, he left his back yard and began walking towards the woods. As he reached the woods he slowly noticed the trees got taller and taller the deeper he went into the woods. Finally he was standing directly in front of the young girl singing the song. He noticed that there were five dogs playing near her, until they noticed Ray.
The girl continued to sing but the dogs all sat down next to her. Then the song was over and the girl stopped. She walked straight towards Ray. The closer she got the taller she seemed, which was odd to Ray because she looked to be about the same age as him. She kneeled down and pated Ray on the head, which made Ray notice his hands had been exchanged for a pair of adorable pair gray paws. She picked him up and was barely able to hold him. As she walked he noticed that her ears looked like dog ears and she had a small red tail swishing back and forth while she walked. The girl brought Ray to the other dogs. She set him down next to the tallest of all the dogs. Finally she sat down in front of him and began to talk.
“Hiya, little doggie, my name is Hinote.” She giggled then continued, “You’re a strange little doggy. I’ve never seen a doggy like you before. You look like a wolf, but you’re human, aren’t ‘cha? *giggles* You’re just like me! Mr. Doggy, I look like a human but I’m only part human.” She says as her tail starts to wag a hundred miles an hour. Ray looked around to try and figure out what Hinote was talking about. When he looked back there was a reddish-brown puppy with white paws and a white chest. Ray was more confused now. The little puppy came over to Ray and licked his cheek. He heard the little puppy whisper, “If you ever need me you know where to find me. Bye.” She mumbled something then dropped a whistle on a red string. Suddenly she ran off with her pack. All Ray could do was stand there and watch her leave. Right when the dogs were almost out of view he shouted, “Hinote! You forgot your whistle.” The puppy stopped and turned around. Ray yelled, “Don’t you need this?” The puppy shook its head and howled. Somehow Rey understood it was for him. The puppy turned to leave again and Ray shouted, “Goodbye Hinote! Oh, I never told you my name! It’s Ray Tashino! Don’t forget it ‘cuz I know I’ll never forget you!” With that the dogs were gone.
Suddenly Ray’s older brother was right next to him. *Ray’s older brothers name?* picks up Ray and puts Ray on his shoulders. Ray’s older brother says, “You look happy Ray. What happened?” “Nothing Big Bro,” Ray replied as he held the whistle close to his heart then slipped the string around his neck. Ray’s brother noticed and asked, “What do you have?” Ray quickly replied, “It’s nothing!” “Ok, ok little bro but you know dad was worried about you. He didn’t realize you could open the gate on your own. You got to be especially careful in near those woods because there are wild dogs and who knows what else in there. Don’t go there anymore, Got it?” Ray’s brother said worriedly.
When they got back home Ray stood in his room and blew the whistle as hard as he could but no sound came out. He was so worried he broke it he didn’t realize that all the dogs he just met were standing right outside his window. He carefully wrapped it up in news paper and stored in his sock drawer. That night he heard that beautiful tune again but this time it was being howled. He slept more soundly than he had ever before. The next morning he went to pull the whistle out of this drawer but it had disappeared. Ray was upset for a minute then he realized that it all must have been a dream, just a figment of his imagination.
