I saw it. And it was awesome. I was a little worried that it was going to be another bad movie like Minority Report was, but this pairing up of Mr. Cruse and Mr. Spielberg produced a thuroughly fantastic, thought provoking, scary, and for a lack of a better word, cool movie. It really felt like I was in this crisis with them, experiencing what they experienced. I was sad when they were (usually I just laugh when some one dies, I'm a sadist, i know), and I rejoiced when they rejoiced. I was frightened when they were frightened, and wanted to scream when they screamed (but thankfully I didn't sweatdrop lol) I think that everyone should see it, sci-fi fan or not.
However much I enjoyed this film, I still can not get over Tom Cruse. I never really saw him as this crummy slimy dad that's trying to keep his children safe, I saw him as a crummy, slimy actor who just wants his acting to be safe. It seems like I can never get past the fact that he's Tom Cruse. I never see him as the character that he's portraying. Although, in WOTW, I did see a glimmer of emotion, and promise of a character. I guess that's improvement.
In complete contrast, Dakota Fanning was FANTASTIC. She's the most promissing child stat I've seen in a while. She portrayed every emotion to a tee, and really seemed believeable.
There were some pretty funny parts, and of course theer was som good arguements between the the bozo dad and the older brother. The special effects were magnificent. CGI has a tendancy to look too much like video games, and less like what they're supposed to look like. But these aliens were very real, and very creepy. So the moral of the story kids is that you should drop what you're doing right now and RUN over to the nearest theater and buy a ticket for War of the Worlds (and no, I was not paid to write this, but I should be)
