I just recently got engaged (YAY!) and I was thinking about why the wedding ring is worn on the left hand. Wouldn't it do fine on the right? I think about it in this way.
The right hand is a symbol of authority. Y'know, the first born son sits on the right hand of the father because he has the authority of the father or will have it. Therefore, it is a masculine symbol. Well, since the world thinks things in oppositions, then the left must be a symbol of the feminine. That's why it is said silver is to be worn on the left. Silver is a feminine metal, whereas gold is a masculine. (Gold=sun; Silver=moon)
Okay. A wedding ring is also called a wedding band. What does a band do? It binds. What metal is a wedding band traditionally? Gold, normally yellow gold. (Though white gold is coming into fashion but anyway.) So, in a symbolic sense, the woman is binding her feminity, represented by her left hand, with that of masculine authority, represented by the gold wedding band. She can exercise her femininity (i.e. her sexuality) but only in the confines of marriage.
....and I think about stuff way too much....
