Prom Hairstyles
Prom Hairstyles: Sedu, Teen, Updos, African American

Prom is one of the most memorable moments in a young woman's high school years. With the possibility of a romantic slow dance, it is important for a girl to have the perfect prom hairstyle.

When it comes to prom hairstyles, there are plenty to choose from.
With a variety of updos, half-up/half-down or all the way down prom hairstyles, it can be difficult for a girl to know where to start.

There are ways to make the process if choosing a prom hairstyle easier. For instance, always work the texture and length of your own hair. Whether it is straight, curly or kinky, it is important to work with the hair's natural waves; this will eliminate one huge prom hairstyle headache.

Updo Prom Hairstyles

A great prom hairstyle for shoulder-length (or longer) hair is a ballerina bun, which is based on the ponytail. Simply brush hair up into a high ponytail and secure it with a neutral colored band. Then, wrap the ponytail several times around itself and secure it with bobby pins. To glam up this simple updo, add a tiara, flowers or an ornate beaded headband around the bun.

For those with medium length wavy or curly hair, another popular prom hairstyle works well. Before styling, define the texture of the hair with a bit of serum or pomade. Beginning a section on either side of the head, take a one-inch section of hair and twist it (tightly) back along the head until the height of the earlobe.

Continue doing this in one-inch sections along the scalp and then secure each row with a pretty barrette.

The French twist works for all textures and most about all lengths of hair. To do this, simply gather the hair in the middle of the back of the head and twist into a roll. Secure it with a pearl-accented barrette. This stylish updo lends itself to multiple styles, so do not be afraid to experiment until it looks just right.

African American Prom Hairstyles

In its natural state, African American hair can run the full gamut from wavy to curly to kinky. If African American hair is chemically relaxed, then any of the above styles can be easily assimilated into African American prom hairstyles. The following style is great for very curly or kinky hair and is similar to the twisted prom hairstyle mentioned above.

First, define the curls by scrunching a defining pomade or hair serum into the hair while blowdrying. Once the hair is dry, use a small-barrel curling iron (1/4 inches) to define each curl. This is a great way to add texture to natural African American hair. The hair can be left like this or it can be tightly twisted in quarter inch sections from the hairline to the crown of the head. Finally, accessorize this African American prom hairstyle with some pretty barrettes or pins.
