We Carry the Fire
The Road Poem

When it came time for the world to end
It ended entirely my friend.
Leaving nothing of our ancient lore
These kindling spirits became no more.
My son has uttered his frightful fears
And yet I cannot give a few tears.
But I have said “We carry the fire.”
I trust my instincts and follow this path
And battle this world’s new wrath.
Many times we have faced the dangers
Cannibals, Ghosts, even my brothers have become strangers.
Men are not as they used to be
And I tolerate it to a certain degree.
They are long gone, along with this world.
I keep my son alive, even in this afterworld.
He can live on, he can carry the fire.
I still have hope, but each day my time comes to its closing act.
We walk through death and decay, with cold fingers down our back.
I do believe it is my time to go.
Carry on these words boy and grow.
“We carry the fire.”

- Poem made for a project based off the book "The Road"
