The Picture Perfect Family
By Me biggrin
Nicole has always had a very happy life; she had a loving family and a very kind and sweet little sister, Becca. They had a picture perfect family. A dad who owned a bunch of stocks and her mother was a stay at home mom. Years passed and when Nicole was 16 and Becca was 10, their parents started having problems, late in the night; they’d wake up to screaming and occasionally something breaking against their hardwood floor. Often times Becca got really scared and ran over to Nicole’s room. Nicole didn’t like this at all, because she was much older and a lot more anti-social in family activities and situations. She told Becca to leave the room many times and acted like she didn’t care about their parents and her little sister who wanted no more that a hug and possibly a kiss on the cheek every now and then. Nicole had hard times at school too; she had very recently gotten dumped by her boyfriend after dating for three whole years and sharing so much. Her best friend, Amber and she had gotten into a fight because Amber felt Nicole was ignoring her and acting too depressed and never wanting to do anything because Amber had no idea about her family issues. After their fight, Amber left Nicole on her own and gotten new friends almost instantly. Nicole got very depressed and looked for friends of her own. One day in school she tried to run away. She left through the side door of the school where hardly anyone leaves or enters. When she left the door she noticed about three people beside the dumpster. She greeted them and they had a very strange conversation. She assumed these people were the school druggies. She started commonly meeting them out back behind that dumpster and for the first few days they offered her several kinds of drugs such as, ice, pot, snow, shrooms, E, acid, and sometimes alcohol. She had never accepted any of those until the day after the one night she will never forget, she had woken up to a gun shot, she tried to sleep it off but it was no use. She felt that the drugs were her only refuge. She promptly asked one of the three druggies in the back which drug would help her over these problems. The acid freak sort of hiccupped and said, “Here, acid solves all problems in the world,” as he stumbled to the ground. He picked up a little bag and handed it to Nicole, she took a couple cubes. “These things are gnarly they’re like….uhh acid and umm sugar mixed!” the acid freak exclaimed while he was still on the ground. Nicole shoved three acid cubes into her mouth. Nothing was happening to her so she took three more out of the little plastic bag. All of the other druggies then looked at her as she pooped each one into her mouth. They all started giggling and falling over and Nicole, who had never even heard of acid, just stood there, a little puzzled. Still nothing was happening, so she felt sort of sad and sat down in front of the dumpster. “Nothing is happening to me.” She sighed. After about an hour of sitting in the same place and listening to the others play around and laugh bored her. When suddenly she started feeling very wobbly, she tried to stand but then fell down because she felt like she was standing on a big pile of gelatin. Everyone else laughed and kind of fell on her. She started giggling too and tried to stand once more, only the ground felt even more wobbly than last time. She laughed as she fell and looked to the ground, it was red and when she moved she saw it jiggle a whole bunch. “Oh my god, guys, we’re standing on red jell-o!” she giggled but it came out more as “OH gaaawwd guyssss….ssss we are…..umm…..like…sitting on ….re-red jell umm jell-o!” She giggled some more and fell on her side laughing very vigorously. Then, giant, colorful feathers started falling out of the sky, she slowly crawled on top of a feather and the feather took her up into the sky. “Oh look at the beautiful green sky, perfect weather for flying!” she screamed into the open air. A face started appearing in the clouds ahead. It looked exactly like her father, he bellowed in his usual very low voice, “I shot your mother last night!” Nicole was suddenly very frightened; she stood up on the feather and yelled, “No you didn’t go away! Leave!” The clouds started parting as the giant face was laughing, and slowly the laughter faded into shrieks. “GIVE US OUR FEATHERS!” Tons of naked birds were flying towards Nicole and the millions of colorful feathers. The birds’ skins were multi colored too. But each one was a different color, same as the feathers. Suddenly all the feathers started yelling their color names, the green shouted green and the blue, blue, the magenta, magenta, the pomegranate, pomegranate and so on and so fourth. Nicole was on the lead feather and she was helping guide the feathers to safety. The naked birds started gaining on them and taking their color-coded feathers. Within minutes, Nicole’s feather was the last one left. She steered it to the left, then did a loop-de-loop. She faked right, went left, which caught the birds off guard for a split second. One bird appeared to the right of her and had a huge toothy smile. She tried to speed up then one appeared to the left too, once again with a huge toothy grin. Neither of them was the right color for this feather but she assumed these ones were helping the lime green bird catch the lime green feather. She then rapidly sped up and after wheat felt like three days she saw a huge field of spiders. All the spiders were after her she quickly found out when they were shooting their rainbow web up at her. She got really scared and closed her eyes tight. Tears started running down her face. The feather started flying crooked and she lost grip and started falling into deep space. Days passed until suddenly she hit the ground. It was hard and had a lot of rocks on it. She looked up and saw three, really tall looking people. All three looked down and they fell to the ground giggling uncontrollably. “Are you finally back?” one guy asked. “Yeah…..I think” she laughed a little, “That was gnarly!” “You were gone for like……four hours, good job!” the other acid freak managed to say while he was laughing. Suddenly Nicole realized, she must’ve jumped off the dumpster because she had cut elbows and knees. It didn’t hurt her though, because she was still a little numb from the trip. She sat her back against the front of the dumpster. She took some marijuana and lit up. She was sitting there, next to her somewhat newly found friends, all of them still laughing a bit, but they had all defiantly calmed down. It was starting to get dark and they said their goodbyes and went home. No one else knew except herself, but while they were sitting in front of the dumpster she took some shrooms. When she got home she ran upstairs and ate the shrooms she had stolen from one of her friends. She quickly found out what happens when you take shrooms. She started seeing things and she started to feel wobbly again. She lay down on her bed and watched all of her stuffed animals around her room start to dance a nice little ballet; she started to hear beautiful music in the background and swiftly fell asleep. BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! Her alarm clock screamed. Nicole rolled over and hit her clock with a THUD! She lay in bed a few more minutes then tiredly got up. She looked in the mirror and noticed she still had her outfit on from yesterday. At that moment she decided she needed a new wardrobe. She went into her closet; got a long dark skirt some stockings and she found a grey sweater. Those clothes didn’t fit the best because they were a present from her grandmother before she died. She looked in the mirror when she was done dressing. She stared long and hard at her long black hair. She opened her drawer and took out a pair of scissors. She cut her hair, chunk by chunk. When she finished, it was really short and a little messed up, but she liked it that way. She grabbed her bag and hopped down the stairs not even making an effort to say goodbye to her family. On the way to school, she saw Amber. “What has happened to you Hun?” asked Amber. Nicole looked Amber in the eyes and made a sort of squeaking sound. She ran off to the school. She went inside and everyone cleared the hallways for her to pass, she didn’t pay attention though, she didn’t care. She made her way to the side door and very sneakily went through the door and met her friends out there. They sat around all day, smoking most of the time and giggling and telling stories which, most of the time, turned into gibberish. This went on for a few weeks. Then one day on the way to school again she saw Amber. Amber stopped right in front of Nicole and put her hands lightly on Nicole’s shoulders. “Sweetie, I found out what happened….with your family, I want to help you feel better, okay?” Amber said softly so no one would over hear. Nicole started to cry and hugged Amber really tightly. “Please help me,” Nicole managed to push through her tears. Amber helped Nicole through a few days of counseling. The whole school had rumors about her, but she tried to ignore them. Until one day in the middle of third period math she started to have a flashback. “I need to help them!” Nicole screamed and ran out of the classroom. She climbed up the four flights of stairs to the forbidden floor and went out the door to the roof. She went to the edge of the roof, and looked down, there was a crowd forming. “I need to help the feathers!” she screamed at the top of her lungs. Nicole jumped into the air thinking she was going to be caught by one on the birds circling, she was caught. She was caught right when she hit the ground. She died soon after, her rib case was smashed and one of her spine fragments was misplaced, and he neck was broken and her jaw smashed. A couple days later, the doctor who did the autopsy said, “Looks like she broke many bones and that she died instantly and painlessly. Did you know that you daughter did drugs, I found several samples of different ones in her blood.” Her mother looked shocked and she hugged Nicole’s father. “No, we were unaware of this…she has been acting a little weird lately though.” Her father said very boldly. Both her parents turned around and left the office, their arms around each other. The family never fought again and paid more attention to Becca and had a much happier life. Sad over their loss, and bringing flowers to her grave every Sunday even in the intense cold they had wished that something different…less scaring would have happened for their parents to open their eyes and see that they have a beautiful family that needs them.
