Prompt: Food

Cierk had never liked cooking. It brought back too many memories of a past she would rather be forgotten. She had been no better than one of the tools used in cooking back then, a slave to the words of others. Cooking was just another one of many chores forced upon her, the only redeeming quality being the opportunity to plot in relative silence and peace.

The happiest day of her life had been the day she escaped.

‘Actually,’ she thought as she diced tomatoes, ‘the second happiest day. Right after the first day of sailing my ship.’

As captain, Cierk wasn’t forced to cook, though as a treat for her crew she would from time to time. In that period of her life it was a novelty to be thanked for her efforts, and to receive compliments.

Yet, even so, it still never failed to surprise her when it was her turn to cook for her new ‘family’. So few of them could cook, Herself, Nova, and Seilvare being the only decent ones out of the bunch, that they took turns. It wasn’t their actions that surprised Cierk, their cheerful fighting and shouting, but it was that she truly didn’t mind the work, for once in her life.

Sure, cooking was a chore, but they changed it, somehow. Cierk might not be able to put a name to what that change was, but it made cooking more interesting, at any rate.

“You had better eat all of that Fang-Boy, being dead doesn’t excuse you from eating your vegetables.”
