Our world is not perfect. I imagine that there are few who would argue with me on that point. As denizens of an imperfect world, it is our prerogative (perhaps even our duty) to find faults in the systems that govern our existence. What makes the difference, I think, is how we choose to react to those faults when we find them. It is my opinion that imperfection is simply a part of life. Sometimes, it is healthy to react to said imperfection with passion, anger or sadness, but such things can be taken too far.
I know you've heard it a million times before, but life is short. Every breath you take is closer to your last. Your youth will fade. The green Summer of your life will yield to Autumn, and eventually succumb to a grey Winter. All things die -- this is a principle of existence that cannot be altered.
Should you be afraid of the inevitable? Certainly not. Fearing the unknown will gain you nothing. You will face it when the time comes. Let it be.
Should you ignore the inevitable? Sadly, it seems to be a common misconception that this is the best course of action. How many decisions do we make, looking forward to nothing more than the next week, or the next month? In one year (or one hundred years) will these things even matter? The things that bring us happiness will fade. On the other side of that, however, so too will the things that trouble us eventually disappear.
So then, is life nothing more than a swirling mist of circumstance and chance that spirals down into the black abyss of the unknown? Some might argue that. I disagree, however. I think that if we would stop worrying about our daily existence for one second --
stand back... take a breath...
-- maybe we would find that there is something deeper. Something that lasts. Something that perseveres the twisting currents of existence and shines like a beacon of light into the deepest recesses of our human heart. It has many names. Joy. Love. Peace. Call it what you will, but the nature of this Light is such that, once it touches you, you are never the same.
Oh sure, you may forget from time to time. But it never leaves.
Just take a moment to remember that Light. The deeper, lasting memory that doesn't fade with our day to day pleasure and pain. Now, take that light... And do something with it. What good is life if you don't live?
Make your mark. Strive for the eternal. Nothing else is worth the effort.
