Selflessness does not exist. No one can act out of anything but self interest.
Let's assume that most would say sacrificing yourself in a painful way is selfless.
Now why would a person do this? Because they believe it is right or they think it will help redeem them in some spiritual way.
Doing something because you think it is the best way to act is not selfless. You are trying to avoid doing what you think is bad. On some level, you are really considering yourself in your action.
If doing something will benefit you spiritually, it is even more obvious that it is not selfless. You're trying to clear your name or gain karma, or any number of other religious constructs.
Please post any arguments and I'll respond to them in this post.
