Extraterrestrial, 2014 Directed by Colin Minihan Not Rated
I love this stuff. I do, I'll freely admit it. E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial was one of the first movies I ever watched and also one of my first favorites. I also loved Close Encounters of the Third Kind but we'll save that for another day. As I realize that both those movies were made before I was born, I was fortunate enough to have older brothers. *thumbs up to me*
The movie was interesting and funny. It wasn't scary enough to be a true horror but it wasn't completely campy, either. It was fun and thrilling, lots of giggles and quick-flashed shadow images. I enjoyed this film, I thought it was great for its genre and here's why:
heart Using actual information based of modern (and semi-modern) day reports. I say actual in the sense that it is documented; that is not to say that every documented report is verifiable, accurate, truthful or without cause for doubt. This includes such information as visual descriptions, noises, and out-of-this-world materials.
heart Visual effects. For not being the most popular film, it was very visually captivating. While it may not be as budget-abundance as Prometheus, it was still very eye-catching and impressive. I appreciate the efforts that went into the minuscule details throughout the movie including, but not limited, to camera work during seemingly unimportant scenes, house and nature design, and the UFO's. (I considered writing SPOILER before that part... but the movie is called Extraterrestrial... so I shouldn't have to warn the audience that there are spaceship. xd )
heart heart My favorite part. Hence the two hearts. There is an AMAZING homage to The X-FILES!!!! It isn't a "LOOK" type of reflection on the iconic sci-fi/mystery television series. It is more of a "if you get a moment, take a gander over that way and see what you see."
I won't lie... If I wasn't such a nerd in this subject matter, it wouldn't have been an homage at all. Because you honestly have to be a fan of the show (and it's movies) to catch on. Otherwise, it just blends right in with the film. Which is awesome.
Overall, as an alien-movie loving individual, I rate this movie 7.6/10... and the more I think about it (and probably as I re-watch it because I know I will at some point) I will probably rate it higher. xd
I think I've proven my nerd/weirdo-status enough for the day.... week... year...
Anyway, enjoy!
(IMDB.com) "A group of friends on a weekend trip to a cabin in the woods find themselves terrorized by alien visitors."
