This is a story I wrote a long time ago.
“This is better than my old home,” Moria said as she walked over to the window. She opened it only to see the dark clouds gathering over the small, town that was now her home. “Wonderful, My first day in town and its going to rain,” she said sarcastically. She grabbed her coat and went outside to explore. She noticed that the town seemed abandoned. There was a school, the apartments that she had taken residence in, and a few boarded up stores. Something moving inside the old church caught her eye as she walked down the street.
It was Christian, her enemy and soon to be murderer, lighting candles. As soon as he finished the task of giving light to the darkened church, he walked over to a bench where a small black case lay. He opened it and pulled out a beautiful silver flute. At the same moment, Moria walked in through the broken, shabby doors.
“Oh, who are you? I thought this town was abandoned,” Moria said a little embarrassed for walking in on someone.
“Moria? Is that you?” Christian said laying down his flute. Moria nodded slightly in reply. “It’s been years since I saw you last.”
“You haven’t quite answered my question yet. Who are you,” Moria inquired again.
Christian, having remembered that his task was to kill her picked up his flute and began to play a soft, haunting melody. He glanced over to Moria as he played.
Moria, now seemingly set in some sort of trance by the music, closed her eyes and began to relax as two black tattered wings emerged from her back. The music stopped and the flute hit the ground with a loud clank bringing Moria back to reality. She gasped and ran back home realising that she just had given her secret away.
“Oh great. Now Christian knows I have wings! What on earth am I going to do”, Moria quietly asked herself as it started to rain. She walked over to the window and noticed that the sun had set behind the horizon, leaving the town darker and more sinister than it had seemed before. “I’d better get some sleep. First things first,” Moria yawned as she climbed into the bed in the corner of her apartment.
The next morning, Moria awoke to the sound of thunder. She jolted up and looked out the window. “Another stormy day? This is a strange place, it seems like its always dark,” Moria muttered as she got dressed. Grabbing her staff for security, she walked out the door into the cold, pouring rain. She hoped she could find more signs of life and some sort of brightness in her new hometown.
“I should have never come here”, Christian muttered as he sat down on a church pew. “I should have refused the assignment. But, I couldn’t pass up the money. I really need it. It doesn't matter if I love her. Love doesn't pay the bills."
Just then, Moria walked into the church, interrupting his thoughts. Little did she know, this was to be her last time to walk anywhere. “Oh, I didn’t know you would be here again”.
“Unfortunate for you, yes. I have come here with purpose. I’m on a mission. I know who you are and that you are a fallen angel. That is why I’ve been sent here. To rid the earth of your kind. Prepare to meet your end, lovely Moria”.
What ensued, was the most horrific battle that had taken place between two people. Christian found that Moria nearly evenly matched him in his fighting skills. After hours of beating each other until both were near death, Christian delivered his final, most powerful blow. Moria fell heavily to the floor, beaten, bloody and now dying.
“I remember now…” she whispered to Christian. “We loved each other. Once”. She raised her hand up to Christian and it fell heavily just before reaching his tear stained cheek.
Christian gathered up his things and looked over his shoulder one last time to see his beloved Moria. He wasn’t sure how he would live with himself knowing that he had slain the only one he had ever loved. He would just have to believe, as he did when he accepted the assignment. She had become a fallen angel and that made her less than human and unworthy of even a descent burial. He could have never loved her the way he once had because of it.
Christian left the dark town that day to move on to his next assignment and the rest of his life.
