Okay, so today was the Koei aptitude test! Here's my report to all you wannabe game developers...
First off, some of the people there weren't at all gamers. It was like... "Does Koei make any American games?" That wasn't the worst comment. The worst one was "I don't really like any games... what the heck am I supposed to put for the top five?" And one guy said, "Well, we don't have to PLAY games, we want to program them." I was like... "Yeah, but you have to know what your competition is doing... er..."
Whoa! Why are you people HERE!?
Annnnnnyways.
So, after a long wait (it was snowing! but I got there an hour early just to be safe), we got into the room. There were probably about 60 of us, all in numbered seats. And then they handed out the test.
The HR girl (Carol) said: "This test is in two parts. We're going to do part B first today, just to shake things up a bit."
So, what is part B? They gave us a sheaf of paper, must have been 50 pages thick, most of it was double sided. But do we spend an hour on that? Nope!
First test was the "How fast is your basic math" test. I think I did maybe 10 questions and then "okay, stop!" And it went on like that for a while, math questions, english-math questions, a bit of pattern matching... and then...
"Write dots in each of these triangles. Don't miss a dot, or we'll stop counting. GO!" (I got a hundred out of maybe 500?)
And then after that:
"Cross hatch as many squares as you can (looks like the top of the Japanese character for flower). GO!" I think I did better on that one, by what I saw when the guy beside me finished the test... but then, I know the strokes for flower. I can do it fast!
The rest of the test was really standard. 10 minutes of alphabetical pattern matching (a a b b c c d d: what's next?) which I think I rocked on. I finished before anyone else. Then 15 minutes of pattern matching with pictures. I didn't do quite as well on that... Then 20 minutes of MATH! Now, okay, it was simple math (problem setup from words, then solve addition, ratios, etc), but I've been out of math classes for two years now. It was hard to get them all done in time. I didn't quite make it, but then, I don't think anyone else did either...
I saw a guy from Waterloo there... he had all sorts of things crossed out on his answer sheet.
I sooo hope I get an interview. We'd be talking to the people from Koei Japan, so I'll have to prepare a game-related story about my Japan experience. Maybe about bringing home Yoshinoya and being stopped by the security guard in the airport or something? Heh.
Well, comparing me to "Duh, Koei makes what now?" I think I should have a pretty good chance.
