Friday, May 26 2006 at 11:35 Sheila Suzann Vogelsang-Hoffman was taken off life support. There was nothing more that the doctors could do. They had done everything in their power. To keep her on life support would have just prolonged her suffering. To be kept on life support like that- to have the only thing keeping her alive as a machine pumping oxygen into her lungs and countless numbers of IV drips, chest tubes and grieving family members- she would have never wanted that.
Sheila Vogelsang-Hoffman was 59 years old. She left behind three children, who she had raised to the best of her ability. She was a loving mother, sister, grandmother, daughter and friend. She truly had a heart of gold and was the strongest woman I have ever known. She was my mother.
Sheila had been in the ICU of St. Mary's hospital for about 3 1/2 weeks prior to her death. She had many friends and was loved by many. She would have done anything for anyone; any time or any place.
Not even 2 weeks later, her diabetic and long time drug abuser son died. His name was William Meyer Berman. He left behind several friends, his two sisters... and a 15 year old son, Alex. My brother died from his years and years of drug addiction. His heart grew to the size of an 80 year old man's and failed him not even 2 weeks after my mother died.
Please remember never to take life for granted. Never leave someone with a grudge. Always take each day at a time, but live each day as your last. It takes too much energy to hate someone. It takes too much of your precious life to be angry and selfish all the time. Again, never take life for granted because in a blink of an eye it can be taken away.
