SARAH! HURRY UP! WE HAVE TO GO NOW!” Her mother yelled through the house. Sarah had to go and get her new school schedule and books. Her slow march to the car told her mother how happy she was, not at all. She sat in the front seat and put her feet on the dash, playing with her shoelaces. She wasn’t looking forward to the long trip of foreboding and headaches to get to the prison she called school. She only had one good friend and they moved away last year to California.
‘Damn Cali, what’s so good about California!?’ She was alone without her only shoulder to cry on. What if she got the classes with the dumbasses who think they are almighty and powerful...gloating about how they did this and that to their best friends girl or did some huge dose of drugs. She was surrounded by them. Her sister was sitting in the car talking about how amazing college is and how lucky she is. Her sister Rachel was a know-it-all pain in her a**. She closed her eyes trying to block out Rachel’s voice. But before she could really get comfortable her mother was pushing her out of car.
“I’m taking your sister cloth shopping! I will be back when we get done.”
“How long will it take?” Sarah asked hoping it wouldn’t be long.
“I don’t know. Have your phone on you.’ Without saying anything to her mother request she stood and walked toward the schools media center.’ DO YOU HAVE YOUR PHONE!?” her mother yelled after her. All she did was wave it behind her, entering the building.
A bad thing about public schools, other than the idiots, was the mass amounts of humans running around saying hey to all their friends and gathering their belongings. They dodged her right as they were about to collide. She sighed stepping into the line for mass book handouts. It was like a lunch line for books. She got through the line and sat with the six new books. She looked down to her first book and groaned as she read AP Algebra.
“Come on! Math is my worst subject and I’m taking AP!? My mother is never doing my schedule again! Why did I let her do it in the first place!” Sarah yelled at herself. She closed her eyes again and thought
‘No phone call from ‘mother dearest’ . I could go look for my classrooms…BUT that would require movement and right now the six books would drag me to the ground. No…no…I will stay right here and wait for my da…’“Excuse me?” Her thoughts were cut off. She opened her eyes and looked up at a boy…no a man….man/guy. His black hair slightly in his yellow-green eyes as he looked down at her.
“Yeah?” She asked putting up her defensive wall.
“Um…well I saw you sitting here…alone with the dreaded stack of books. Are you okay?”
“Oh, yeah just waiting for my mother to pick me up.”
“Ah, well do you mind if I sit?” He motioned to the empty spot next to her.
“Um…sure.” He sat and placed his own books to the side. Sarah looked at his books for a second and counted 3. She was visibly distraught by the number difference. Seeing her face he laughed.
“I’m an exchange student but English is my first language. They wouldn’t let me take more than three classes.” Sarah was now reading the books in the pile.
“AP English II, AP European History, AP Algebra. Hmm, what period do you have math and what is your name?” Sarah was now curious.
“Oh lord how rude of me, Adam Aliox. Nice to meet you…”
“Sarah Smith”
“Sarah.’ He smiled.’ And math is last period for me.”
“Me too. Cool, you have my permission to help me. My mother signed me up for the class and I will guarantee that I will be like someone driving without headlights in the middle of the night in that subject.”Sarah smiled a little. Before anything else could be said her butt started to vibrate. She jumped as it went off and pulled it out. Without a word she hung up the phone with her headache back and feeling pissy again.
“Sorry I have to go...my mother is bitching that I’m not moving fast enough.” Sarah bent over to pick up her books and tried to lift them to no avail.
‘Damn…’ Then she saw Adam look at her questioningly.
“Need help?” He asked.
“Um…’she tried to lift it again’ yes I need your arm strength.” Without another word Adam had picked up two of her books off the top. Now Sarah could carry two in each arm. Perfect.
“Um…follow me.” She led Adam out to the waiting car with her mother and sister looking at the cloths they had bought. Their girly chatting came to a stop as soon as she approached. Sarah ignored it opening the door tossing the books in on top of the clothing bag. Followed by Adam doing the same. Sarah closed the door and stood in front of him and smiled.
“Thanks a lot Adam. I will see you Monday.”
“See yah.” He replied. She sat in the car and watched him shrink into the background.
