a spirited away fanfic close to my heart cry
The light was golden-orange on Chihiro's face as she stood looking over the sea, the wind blowing softly as the world turned toward night. She smiled at the serenity of the water below her as the sun's brilliant orb melted slowly into the horizon.
"You have to get out of here before night falls. Go on, I'll distract them." The memory flickered in her mind, and she almost looked around, expecting to see a boy with dark hair and gray-green eyes that had looked on her with concern and an emotion she had not been old enough to really understand. She held her sweater closer, watching the sun sink ever lower.
Maybe it had all been a dream. Haku had promised to come back to her, come back for her, but it had been eight years. She realized with a dull kind of sorrow that it was eight years ago today, to be precise.
“Will we ever see each other again?”
“I’m sure we will.” His voice was calm and sure, like he had always been, but his grip on her hand—desperate, almost—belied his tone, and in his eyes there was what looked like extreme reluctance to let her go. Ever.
“Promise?”
“Promise. Now go, and don’t look back.”
She ran, her fingers slipping from his. She did not look back.
She wondered if he had watched her go, and knew in her heart that he had. She wondered if he had cried as much as she had, and knew that he had not—Haku did not cry. He had always been the one to comfort her.
“I miss you, Haku,” she whispered to the wind and the sky and the water below that looked so much like the sea from Yubaba’s bathhouse. “Why did you not come as you promised?”
“Excuse me? Miss?”
Chihiro turned, almost jerked, around, badly startled. “Wha—”
A young man stood uneasily on the hillside path below her, the same path that led to the town from the seashore. “I—” He was looking away and paused, seemingly embarrassed. Chihiro stared at him. There was something uncannily familiar about him...“I’m, ah, not from around here, and I’m looking for someone.”
“Oh? Who?” Chihiro asked distractedly. He was tall and handsome, with dark hair and...
Green eyes. The sweater fell to the ground as she stood gaping at him.
The sound made him glance up. He looked straight at her just as the sun’s dying light flooded her face and eyes, and his mouth fell open.
“Chihiro.”
There was no mistaking the tone in his voice. Chihiro’s eyes filled with tears as she ran to Haku’s arms.
He pulled her close, almost desperately. “Oh, Chihiro...”
“Haku,” she cried into his chest. “Haku, why—”
“Shh, Chihiro.” He stroked her hair lightly, his arms the same strong, comforting grip she remembered, and she moved even closer. “Please...please forgive me, I—Yubaba made me stay with her—it was only when she died that I was able to break my contract and come to find you...” As casually as he could, he asked, “There’s no one—I mean, there’s no one you’re, uh, waiting for, is there? I—you seemed happy to see me, but...”
“No,” Chihiro replied quickly. “No, there’s no one. It’s just—” She looked down. In a small voice, she said, “I don’t understand. I thought—I thought...that you had forgotten me.” The last was a whisper.
His arms stiffened, and for a moment she thought he had stopped breathing. She looked up tentatively and was answered by a pair of stormy gray-green eyes that shot through her whole being.
Then she found herself unable to move, because Haku had tilted her chin up and put his lips on hers, gently at first and then not gently at all. Chihiro clung to him.
When he pulled away, holding her at arms-length, he was wearing a sort of half-smile, but the expression in his eyes was not joking in the slightest. In a voice heavy with emotion, he said, “I never forgot you.”
