I’m many people; the ruler of Elysium, Hero of Time, Legendary Phoenix, and the Keeper of Forms. But uh, you can call me Max. I will take you to places of magic and fantasy. First however, we will start at the beginning, where all good legends start.
“Mom, do I have to go to school today?” I pleaded wishing to skip the last day of school, and be allowed to finally go hunting. “No! You may not skip the last day of school. You know how I hate you having those stupid fantasies of going in the wilderness without your father.” My mom, like all moms was over protective. She knew I was 14 and she wouldn’t even let me get my first bow, but I still got it because of my dad. I never really got along with my mom. She was the only child, and was spoiled because she was the most popular kid in school. “Even if you are a super genius and you know the meaning of life,”
“To live and to experience life is the meaning of life.” I said in the quietest voice possible.
“WHAT?!”
Oh crap, I pushed that button that I’ve been hovering over for the last three years. Before she could recover, I ran to my room, got my bow and all the money I had, and darted out of the door. Right as I stopped my mom started to ramble over and over about the things that she had done for me. I turned around to look at my house, and my dad came out of no where. “AHH!” I yelled, “How did you do that?”
“The same way you did.”
“Well, how did I do it?”
“That’s for me to know, and for you to find out. In the meantime let's go for a walk.”
“Where to?”
“Stop asking so many questions. Let the world take you where it wants you to go.”
“So, um, where are we going?”
“Guess what.”
“That’s for you to know and me to find out.”
“Yea.” My dad was only about three inches taller than I am. He seemed to always have a smile on his face, but he had a scar on his right cheek a couple of centimeters long. So my dad and I were walking in the woods just going where ever we wanted to: every day we would walk, hunt for food, and walk some more. If we got to a town or something we would scout it out for a while, and then go in. I’m not really sure why, we just did. Every now and then we would duel with little fashioned swords. Every time we did, I would end up with more bruises and less pride. Even though my father said that I was getting better, I really didn’t see it.
“Now let’s see here, what would be good for you to have?” My dad asked himself while we were in a town. My father is the kind of guy who would go to a shop and bring back more money that he went in with. While he was over at the little shops, I was looking at weapons and other shiny things. “How much is that sword worth?” I asked seeing a sword I liked. It had a red blade, but inside the middle of the blade was a long orange gem that stretched from the handle to the tip. The handle was in the shape of a flying bird that had a bright blue jewel in the center, like with the handle. “Two-hundred gold pieces.” I looked into my change purse, I only had a hundred. “He’ll take it.” My father said as he burst into the door with a smile on his face. “Two-fifty with the case.” The man said looking angry. “OK.” My dad had the biggest grin.
“Dad you didn’t need to do that.” I said kind of reluctantly. “Yes I did, you need a sword.” My dad was a weird guy, I’ve had a feeling that he really wanted to buy me a sword for the longest time. “Oh... Well, thanks.” I said still feeling awkward. “You’re welcome, now on to the next town.” My father said out of nowhere. I agreed.
As we arrived at the gate there was a man about his late fifty’s standing there. “Uh, dad.” I said worried. He didn’t look like a friendly person. “Yea I see him, don’t worry, he’s a friend.”
“Really? He doesn’t look like a friend to me. To me he looks like a man who wants our money.”
“He doesn’t want our money he has enough of it already.” As the man approached I could see that he had battle scars from who knows where or when. “Jake.” He leaned over with a weird look in his eyes. Fear wiped my dads face, and at that moment, we left.
“Where are we going?” No answer. By this time we were running as fast as we could. As we ran I felt that we kept on getting faster and faster until we were a good ten miles away from the town. “I’m done.” I wheezed. I was so tired I couldn’t even stand, so I collapsed right then and there. “Good idea.” My dad was just as tired as I was.
The next morning, we just kind of sat there. Not really doing anything. “So what was that all about last night?” We just sat there for a couple more minutes not really doing anything.
“That man was an old friend of mine. We used to live in the same town. One day we did the same thing you and I are doing, going on a “walk”. Then one day we met a man named Blaze. His name suited him real well. He looked as if there was a fire in his eyes. There were only two things he liked to do: he liked to fight, and he liked to kill. Well one day we happened to run into him. He started to kill people in the town, for no apparent reason. It was strange, the way he used the sword, he seemed to dance with it. Then he destroyed the whole town, with just a wave of his sword. The only thing left standing was Blaze.” My dad seemed to be in a different time sitting there. “That town was rebuilt, and we were in it. Blaze was there too, that’s why we had to leave immediately. Blaze knows my face, and he never forgets a face.”
Oh crap. We were in a town with a mad man and I didn’t even know it. “We have to keep a good solid pace son. You set it, I’ll follow” My father commanded. He looked really nervous. This man was the real deal and he was after my dad and me. With that we started walking. “Umm, dad.”
“Yea?”
“Why is it so quiet?”
“Because Blaze knows that we were at that town. The animals fear him so they don’t want him to know where they are…” Right then the forest exploded with noise. “Blaze’s coming!” My dad shouted. It took my mind a few seconds to register what had been said. I pulled out my sword and turned around, ready to fight. The next moment, there was a weight on my sword and blood was dripping down my hand, I had killed a man…
“Hey kiddo, wake up.” My dad said, “Ten more minutes dad.” I mumbled, “No, Now!” That woke me up. I jumped up so fast that my sword fell from my hand clean. “Uh, Max, what happened to Blaze?” Then everything came back to me. Last night, Blaze dying, and me killing him. Then the trees that were in front of me shattered. I didn’t know why but I had a feeling that I had done it. My dad sat there staring at the trees. “What happened?” My father said amazed. “I don’t know.” My god, what happened? A tree just shattered into a million pieces. But why did it happen?
"YOU KNOW WHAT HAPPENED”
What was that?
"YOU MUST COME TO ME,
FOR YOU ARE THE ONLY ONE WHO CAN SAVE
THE WORLD FROM A FORCE TOO TERRIBLE
FOR ANYONE, EVEN ME TO HANDLE
ALONE”
What was that voice?
“COME TO THE CENTER OF THE FOREST,
I WILL BE WAITING FOR YOU
MAX.”
What forest?
“Hey dad where is the center of the forest?” I asked trying not to sound to worried. “It’s where it is Max. No one knows where it is, and no one probably ever will.”
“Why?” I asked. “Because it’s magic,” my father replied. Magic…
