Chapter 3:
The Demon

Van opened his eyes to see a cool brown ceiling above him. There was a fire going to the left of his place on a bed. The fire was the only source of light in the small room. It was a comfortable room. Warm with the mix of herds hanging around in the air. He himself had been in the room many times when he was younger. But by the time he reached the age of twelve, he started to figure out how not to get injured. Most of the people in the village did not like to enter the healer’s home. No one disliked the healer. In fact, she was quiet the lady around town. She was striking to most single men. The married ones knew better then to stare at her or else they would get a good talking from their wives. No. The healer was not disliked. Everyone just knew that if someone walked into her house, either they or someone else in their family was hurt.
Hushed voices filled the room. They both belonged to women, one of which was the healer’s. Van could barely hear the voices in their quiet tones. He closed his eyes to not draw attention to himself. People tended to stop talking about the one in bad health when they notice that they are awake. Right now, Van needed as much information as possible. All he could really tell was that there was a great pain in his back.
“Will he be alright?” A worried voice asked shakily.
There was a pause before an answer came. “I don’t know. There is a limit to what herbs can do before you need magic.”
“Oh.” A sob came from the other woman.
