Cynical and sin-stained
Job interview woes
A few weeks back I had an interview for a position as "Visual Presentation Consultant" for a large international women's clothing retail chain that shall remain nameless just in case.

I get to the first interview and they explain the posting to me, and it's nothing like the listing on the website was. Way less creativity/layout work, way more obnoxious texty gruntwork and translation. Even so, not such a horrible job.

They invite me back to a second interview, and ask me repeatedly if I'd be okay with "doing lots of overtime" and "not having a social life". I try to get them to give me a remotely clear idea of how much overtime "lots" is, and never get a straight ******** answer. I make my apprehensions about it clear, but nonetheless get invited to a third interview.

I get to the third interview, they ask me ridiculous questions like "What is the weirdest thing that ever happened to you" and "do you believe in auras?". Also, they continue to press the overtime issue. They ask me what my previous job was like, and I mention that my boss didn't like paperwork so I had to do all of his, and that he could be sort of uncouth (see this entry for examples), but aside from that he's a good guy.

A week later, I get a letter saying that after careful review of my resume, they've determined I don't have the necessary qualifications, bla bla bla, but they'll keep me on file for other openings.

So this morning, the phone rings, and it's the HR coordinator for this big company, letting me know there's an "Administrative Assistant" position opening in another division. I figure, eh, why not, go for it, post my resume. She calls me back about ten minutes later saying I've got an interview first thing tomorrow morning. WTF, kindof a rush? But it's a possible job, right?

She then proceeds to tell me that the notes in my file say that I was rejected because I was "too concerned about possible overtime" and "badmouthed my former employer." Okay, whatever.

After that, I had to go run some errands with my dad, and had an appointment to go to. While I was in my appointment, he realized that it seemed fishy that they'd reject me for those highly negative (and relatively made-up) reasons, but then beg me to come back for another interview for another posting.

Feeling rather impish and curious, I called them back and said something had come up and I needed to go to the doctor at the same time as my interview was, and could I reschedule for later. My interview was initially at 10 AM. So she says "How about 9 AM? Is 9 good?". Um, how is that later? You're starting to seem like a fifteen year old boy desperate for a good ********. Stop being so grabby. I say no, tomorrow's no good at all. It has to be later.

We finally agreed on 9 AM Thursday morning. But christ almighty, for a company that seemed so determined to find reasons to NOT give me a job two weeks ago, you sure seem needy now. Something just isn't right...

Perhaps they realized how messed up they were two weeks ago and decided to make up for it by being anxious to give you another chance?

    ...Nah.

Something tells me...that their ignorance will not be you bliss. Good luck nonetheless.

    Thanks, Druki.

I'm seriously considering just calling them and saying I'm not interested anymore. I'm going to the children's bookstore I love and my usual comic book store tomorrow to beg them both for a job, so I might be able to legitimately say "Sorry, I've got a job now, ******** off".

I'm going to assume it's safe to say that it's no longer money that you're adamantly looking for but smart and logical co-workers/employers.

Wow, that sounds like the kind of stuff a company I'd interview with would do. And that is a bad sign. I'm always all workin' with criminals for bad wages and cannot seem to escape it. So yeah, sounds shady, like the job fell of the back of a truck or something. Some-kind-of-bookstore job for the win!

You're right about the whole seeming too needy thing. It's kinda creepy when an employer is like that. Makes you wonder why the last person in that position left. The simple fact they didn't like your asking about the amount of overtime is fishy alone but seriously the question about Auras would have probably done me in and made not want to work there. lol.

I'd say forget about them. Or if possible, find someone that is currently working there and see what the deal is.
