Dear Journal,
On Tuesday, October 26, 2006, someone got an e-mail from paypal saying to update their account or it'd be deleted. Not paying attention, this person saw the logo and website the link took them to and it looked exactly like the paypal website. Feeling it was the real deal, they entered their information, only this time it asked for the pin number to their debit card (what they were using as payment).
On Sunday, October 29, 2006, this same person tried to use their debit card to pay for a few things from a store. The card was denied! Feeling very scared, this person shot back home and got on their online bank account and saw a ballance of .15 cents. They looked at their transactions and two withdraws of $143.65 was taken from an ATM and as were a few other ammounts of money- all from the same location!
This method of getting someone's personal information is called "phishing". It's very common; and because the sites are modled exactly like the real thing, the people feel safe giving their information.
I was that person to fall for it.
Please look closely before giving out any personal information (like a pin number or social security number). A place like paypal, e-bay or any other other online shopping website should not be asking for these things.
