Today I feel it would be best to begin with a re-telling of this classic story. After which, I'll give my own experience into why this is such an important lesson.
"The Two Frogs," by Aesop
All summer long there had been no rain, and all the lakes and streams had dried up. Two frogs, looking for water, came upon a deep well. They sat down and argued as to whether they should dive in or not.
Said one frog: "My but the water looks good down there! I think we should hop in without delay. Not only will we have plenty of good fresh water, but we'll have it all to ourselves."
"What you say may be true," said the second frog, "but suppose this well dries up too? Then where will we be...no water and no way of getting out either!"

Well this month was interesting in that it was the first time in a while me and my girlfriend had to put together every single cent we had, and call in any favor we could, in order to pay rent. Money wasn't really the problem in terms of not having any (to begin with), but it seemed that simply losing track of the days in the month, and being much too free with the money we did have, made way for our problem. After all was said and done, we couldn't help looking around and saying "we totally could have bought dinner tonight if we didn't buy that (whatever it was we were regretting at that moment)."
So it's back to ramen two meals a day until our next payday....which is still a few days away. I can't say enough how much it comes in handy that we saved all the loose change of ours. That $18 in change came in handy big-time with getting past the very end of the rent payment, because before that, we were $14 short.
So the moral of this one:
Think twice before you leap.
