As always a new feature goes up and the petition forum explodes with "I hate this!". This weeks it’s a new gold system. Now, I admit to not being thrilled with the new gold system myself, but at least I’ve given it some thought. There are a couple of reasons I could see the Admins for implimenting this.

• The Admins are trying to fight inflation. If gold isn't given out as easily, then the value of a single gold piece goes up. If the value of a 1g is better then prices go down. Unfortunately this doesn’t really change anything. Its like sending us into the Depression, where cars (or in this case, halos) cost hundreds instead of thousands. It sounds nice, but there are reasons for it.
• The Admins are trying to cut down on Poll Guilds. After a certain number of posts, Polls gave out 10g every 30 seconds, no matter what. The Poll Guilds take up space, and flood the Gaian Economy with gold, which devalues the g and thus makes inflation worse. Now its variable. Polls give you anywhere from 3g to 12g. But will that really stop anything? I don’t think it will.
• The Admins are trying to cut down on Spam. We all know that spam is a problem on Gaia. The place is flooded with it. And I’m sure the Mods get their boxes flooded with ‘please remove this post’ reports, because someone bumped in a place that it wasn’t appreciated. If you only get 1g per post that will cut down on it right? I’m not sure that it will, if only because making 1g is better than making nothing at all.

I can also see that this will cause the user count to go up. That might be a good thing for the Gaia Admins, but does it count if half the users are mules trying to make more gold for a single account? I myself have several mules (originally created for role-play purposes) and I can easily see people creating new ones just to be able to get a second, third or fourth turn at the Daily Chance and the 32g for your first post, PM, journal comment, and profile comment of the day. That will add up a lot faster (and take less time) than posting “BUMP!” 200 times a day with one account. Better yet, you’ll get a full set of stuff for free that you can sell.

So no, I don’t like the new gold system. But I’ve thought about why. Its going to my achieving my quest that much harder and longer. It was possible before. Now I’m not sure that it is, and that’s the most frustrating part of it all.
