I emailed the host guy again a while ago to mention my finding out that it's merely the subdirectories that don't want to let me upload. So I guess I can change my main site's main page. Doesn't do a whole lot of good without the subirectories, now, though.
I tried deleting my adopt subdirectory after downloading it, so I could upload a fresh one with permissions. No go there.
edit: felt bad. removed stuff.
