"Shita! Shita!" Pasu called, "Where are you?"

Pasu ran around the tree roots maze. Even the greatest technology cannot avoid nature, he thought, look at all these tree roots!

"Shita!" he called again, and continued to run around the maze.

* * * *

Shita ran with all her might. She tripped on the tree roots on the ground and fell down. She glimpsed the necklace tightly in her hand and continued running. She heard footsteps behind her.

"You can't run away, Shita," Mooscar said, "Give me the necklace!"

Shita gasped. She was in a dead-end. There was no place to run. The sound of the footsteps moved closer. Shita heard a low cry.

"Shita!" the voice called.

"Pasu? Pasu!" Shita cried.

"Shita, is that you?" Pasu called back.

"Pasu, where are you?" Shita looked around her.

"Shita, look here!" Pasu cried.

Shita followed Pasu's voice. She saw Pasu's face through the small hole between the thick tree roots.

"Pasu!" Shita exclaimed.

"Shita, are you all right?" Pasu asked.

"Yes, but...," Shita looked behind her. Mooscar was coming closer.

"Pasu, take the necklace. Destroy it! Run away!" Shita said. She stretched her hand through the small hole between the roots, and passed the necklace into Pasu's palm.

"Leave now, hurry!" Shita said.

"I wouldn't leave without you!" Pasu cried.

"Never mind me! Everyone's lives is in your hands! Throw the necklace into the ocean! If you want to save me, run...," Shita did not have the chance to finish her warning.

Mooscar pulled Shita back from the hole, and pointed his gun into the hole. He pulled the trigger.

The bullet missed Pasu, but scratched his face.

"No!" Shita cried. She held Mooscar's hand and bit it with all her might.

"Oww! You brat!" Mooscar cried.

Shita escaped.

"Listen, boy! If you want to save your girlfriend, give me the levistone!" Mooscar said. He ran after Shita.

"Shita!" Pasu cried.

He whipped the spit of blood from his cheek. He held the gun Big Momma gave him, and pulled the trigger. He blasted a big hole between the roots. He squeezed himself though it.

"I'm coming, Shita...," Pasu murmured.

* * * *

Mooscar pulled the trigger.

Shita fell on the ground.

"Get up, brat! The game of tag is over! Since we are cousins, I thought you would help me to reclaim Laputa, but I was wrong," Mooscar said. He pointed his gun at Shita. "Father was right. Never trust the enemy," he said.

Shita slowly stood up. She turned around and looked at Mooscar straight in the eye. She never had this feeling before. She felt stronger, like the queen she was destined to be.

"You will never be king, Mooscar," Shita said with dignity.

"Shut up, brat!" Mooscar cried angrily. He shot at Shita twice. Shita's braids fell down.

"This is going to be our graves. Yours and mine," Shita said. She walked forward.

Shita stared at Mooscar, "Do you know why my ancestors left Laputa, Mooscar? Do you know why the only thing left in Laputa are tree roots? Let me tell you a song we sang in my homeland.

‘We need roots in the earth;

Let's live with the wind;

With seeds, make fat the winter;

With the birds, let's sing of spring'."

Shita continued, "No matter how many weapons you have, or how powerful you can be, you cannot live separated from the ground, the earth."

"Laputa will not be destroyed. It will be reborn. I will conquer it!" Mooscar screamed angrily. He pointed his gun at Shita again, "Now kneel down. Beg on your knees! Beg for you life!"

"Wait!" a voice cried out. It was Pasu.

"Pasu, get away!" Shita cried.

But Pasu came closer.

"He is going to kill us, no matter what!" Shita warned.

"Boy, the girl for the stone! Give it to me!" Mooscar roared.

Pasu looked at Shita. "I want to talk to Shita first," he said.

"It's not use, Pasu. Throw the necklace away and escape!" Shita said.

"All right. Three minutes," Mooscar said. He walked away from them.

Pasu ran to Shita. They fell into each other's arms.

"Why did you return, Pasu? You should have escaped when I told you to!" Shita whispered.

"You know I will never leave without you," Pasu smiled. He opened his palm. "Look," he said, "I have the levistone."

Shita paused. "You want me to say the destructive words?" she asked.

"Don't worry. I freed Big Mommma and the gang. We are the only ones left," Pasu said.

"Oh, Pasu," Shita said.

Mooscar loaded his gun. "Time is up," he said, "Hand over the necklace."

Pasu and Shita held the stone hand in hand.

Together they said the magic words, "Balse."

The ground rumbled. Pasu and Shita fell down. The levistone shone bright light towards Mooscar.

"Ahh!" Mooscar yelled, "my eyes!" He dropped his gun, and fell down on his knees.

* * * *

"Momma, we have to go. It's collapsing!" Louie said.

"Just a little while," Big Momma said.

The gang was on their small planes, ready to take off.

Suddenly, they saw a bright object flying up from the bottom of the Laputa to the top of castle. The sharp metal point and the metal walls at the bottom of the castle collapsed into the ocean. The rest of the robots, which was located within the metal walls, also fell into empty air.

"That's it. We can't wait for them. Take off!" Big Momma cried.

Chapter 11

"Shita!" a voice called.

Shita slowly opened her eyes. She saw Pasu.

"Pasu!" she whispered softly, "Are we in heaven?"

"No," Pasu laughed, "We are safe. Look, the roots protected us!"

Shita looked down. She saw nothing but thick tree roots beneath her.

"Look, there is our kite!" Pasu exclaimed.

Pasu helped Shita climb the roots. Shita got into the kite.

"Let's hope it can still fly," Pasu said.

He gave the kite one push, and they were in the air.

The wind blew the kite strongly away from Laputa. Pasu and Shita were silent, as they watched Laputa disappeared further away. Now, Laputa was just an ordinary island with a castle at the top, with millions of thick tree roots at the bottom. Pasu also saw the large diamond-shaped levistone, which sparkled brightly in the sunlight.

Pasu broke the silence. "I guess Laputa is just a dream after all. No human can conquer it," he said quietly.

Shita put a hand on Pasu arm to comfort him. "The farer we get away from it, the safer our world will be. Laputa destroys human beings. It is a threat to our world," Shita said.

"You are right. I guess our princess knows best," Pasu laughed.

He looked seriously at Shita. "So what do you say, Princess Lushita? Are you willing to spend the rest of your life with an engineering boy?" Pasu asked Shita.

Shita smiled. "Only if the boy stays with the princess forever...," she said.

They laughed happily.

* * * *

"Hey, Big Momma, it's Pasu and Shita! They are alive!" Charles said.

"You're right!" Big Momma said, "Pasu! Shita!"

Pasu and Shita's kite landed slowly next to the small planes, which was stuck side-by-side together.

"Big Momma!" Pasu cried.

"Pasu! Shita!" Big Momma said.

Shita jumped off the kite and hugged Big Momma.

"I can't believe we are able to meet again!" Pasu said.

"Thanks to you, we escaped!" Henri said, "Look, our planes still worked!"

"No, it doesn't! We'll stuck in the air! Eight heavy bodies on three small planes!" Charles said, "Let's hope the planes stay in the air!"

Everyone laughed.

"Ouch! You're hurting me, Big Momma! What do you have under your clothes?" Shita asked.

"Oh, I'm sorry," Big Momma laughed, "It's just this red ruby necklace!" She pulled a huge red ruby necklace under her shirt, and four diamond rings on her finger.

"And these!" the men cried. Everyone had several diamonds and rubies on them.

"No wonder you people are called air pirates!" Pasu laughed.

* * * *

After a long conversation, it was time to depart. After all, there was not enough gas in the planes to keep eight heavy bodies in the air!

"Goodbye, Big Momma!" Shita said tearfully.

"Oh, don't worry, dear! We will meet again! I'm sure of it!" Big Momma said. She, too, had tears in her eyes.

"You're crying, Big Momma!" Shita said.

Big Momma whipped her tears away. "Oh, it's nothing. Eye allergy is what they called it!" she said.

"We will visit you, Big Momma. Shita and I promise you!" Pasu said.

"Farewell...," they all waved to one another.

And the kite flew away, continuing the journey to a new life.
