I was ((am)) in Richmond Hill visiting my cousin since the fireworks here are the seconds largest in Canada ((or so I've heard)). After eating a late dinner. By late I meant really, really 9:30 last minute dinner before the 10PM fireworks. After stuffing myself full of giant homemade hamburgers, triple rie on bread, and some sour and spicy soup. After bolting all that down, we rush out the door to catch the fireworks.
An insanely large amount of people are out on the roads, trying to reach the same destination as us. Even though it's just around the corner, we didn't arrive until 10:12, thinking we've missed the start of the fireworks. Luckily for us the live band, Hip Kings, was still playing. The singer was a terrible stage hog. It took three tries and a rousing rendition of "Oh Canada!" to punt him off the stage. Finally, the fireworks!
The musics starts and the first cannon was lit. Bright, sparkling blossoms lit up the night sky. Red and white flowers accompanied by comets and echoing explosions. Star showers drifted in the wind and floated in the breeze before fading into nothing.
Suddenly a single bolt of lightning flashes across the sky perfectly in sync with the music. Maybe Mother Nature was getting jealous of the pretty display? Another flash and another. Soon small droplets of rain fell upon us. The rain increased while the music crescendoed. The large sheet of plastic we brought is now used as a shelter. I held my fleece jaket over my head and peer up at the show. Even the thunderstorm seemed to be choreographed.
Unfortunately, Mother Nature won in the end. The firework display was shortened and I didn't get to see the grand finale. Oh well, there's always next year. Now I'm sitting at home typing this up, drying my poor toes that got soaked despite my efforts to keep dry.
So, HAPPY CANADA DAY everyone. I hope you had as much fun as I did. Have I mentioned that I love fireworks yet? Well, I love fireworks. And butterflies. And cheesecake. <3
