there is so much untapped potential in this world
that would be unethical to pursue
given present infastructure

mass digital archives of personal data could be used
to advance medicine
& develop new social services

instead our data is weaponized
reconnaissance for racketeers
scanning for openings & pressure points
to leverage our humanity against us
targeted ads for rope
on a suicidal feed

a cry for help
and a shopkeepers bell
identical blips on
marketing radar

a cure is the premature death of profit
but a band-aid?
a pill?
a distraction?
these things can be dispensed indefinitely
until the suffering poor has nothing less to trade

some learn to weep silently
or camoflouge their tears
some concealer for
the red around their eyes

there is no greater market than the desperate
the starving man will pay the most
for the meagerest meals
so offer the meanest deal possible
and keep the price of theft higher
"tough on crime"

we are trauma bonded to our economy
one hand beats us
the other feeds

"bite one, but spare the other"

as though they do not belong to the same beast
privilege & discipline
tools of master over their subordinate

some submit so enthusiastically
they assume this is freedom

but these scraps will never satisfy me

the blood of kings then?
the meat of the cutty wren?

but vengeance makes a poor feast
ideals cannot substitute bread
